Staff Firmware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Cross-product firmware architecture, platform abstraction layers, wireless coexistence engineering, OTA fleet management, system-level debugging, technical RFC authorship, reliability engineering, field diagnostics
About the role
You will work across multiple product teams as the firmware technical leader who sees the complete device ecosystem when others see only their product. Staff firmware engineers own the architecture spanning team boundaries: shared platform layers, common wireless stacks, fleet update infrastructure, and the integration points where multi-product systems typically fail. You will drive alignment through well-written RFCs, rigorous design reviews, and the credibility that comes from having shipped genuinely hard things before. Success looks like product teams building independently and confidently on your platforms, with fewer integration surprises, faster release cycles, and safer updates.
What you will achieve
- Own cross-product firmware initiatives such as platform abstraction layers, shared connectivity stacks, or fleet update systems from initial proposal through production deployment
- Define firmware interfaces and HAL contracts precisely enough that product teams can build in parallel with minimal integration risk and costly rework
- Drive reliability improvements across the entire device fleet: better field diagnostics, crash analytics pipelines, and systemic fixes preventing repeat failures
- Lead architecture reviews across product teams, catching design flaws in power budgets, timing margins, or security assumptions early when fixes are cheap
- Serve as the escalation point for the hardest device issues, resolving them with systematic analysis spanning firmware, hardware, and cloud services
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 8 to 12 years of firmware engineering with demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives across multiple product teams simultaneously
- Strong architecture skills: designing firmware platforms with clean abstraction layers, hardware abstraction layers, and genuinely portable components
- Deep understanding of reliability engineering for deployed devices: watchdog strategy, fault recovery design, field diagnostics, and OTA update safety
- Proven ability to influence without direct authority through excellent RFCs, incisive design reviews, and honest, evidence-based technical persuasion
- Experience with wireless coexistence engineering: managing BLE, WiFi, and other radios sharing antennas, spectrum, and power budgets harmoniously
- Track record of mentoring senior engineers and measurably raising the technical level of every firmware team you engage with
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering; MS preferred for analytical depth
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with Matter, Thread, or other smart-home standards operating across multi-vendor ecosystems
- Familiarity with cellular IoT technologies (LTE-M, NB-IoT) including power optimization and carrier certification processes
- Knowledge of firmware supply chain security: SBOM generation, vulnerability management, and secure manufacturing flows
- Experience with large-scale OTA campaign management including staged rollouts and fleet health monitoring
