Utility Interconnection Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Interconnection queue portals, PSS/E, CYME, GIS, utility design manuals, easement and permitting trackers, Python
About the role
You will join a renewable energy developer as the engineer who gets projects physically connected to the utility grid. You own the full interconnection lifecycle: applications, utility coordination, study management, and construction of interconnection facilities. This role matters because a project without an interconnection agreement is just a drawing, and your persistence and technical precision through utility processes is what converts pipeline into operating assets. You will manage the interconnection process end to end, from pre-application hosting capacity screens through witness testing and permission to operate. The role requires deep familiarity with utility-specific requirements that vary widely between territories, from Rule 21 in California to distinct processes at every major IOU and cooperative. You will be the troubleshooter when projects stall, finding the technical compromise or restudy path that unblocks a queue position. Your application quality directly sets timelines: clean, complete submittals move while deficient ones sit.
What you will achieve
- Advance 300+ MW of projects through interconnection queues per year, hitting study milestones and agreement execution dates
- Cut average queue-to-agreement timelines by 15 percent through complete first-pass applications and proactive utility engagement, logging every utility interaction so institutional knowledge survives staff turnover
- Own the technical review of utility system impact and facilities studies, challenging upgrade scopes and costs with independent analysis
- Deliver interconnection facility designs (poles, reclosers, metering, telecom) coordinated with utility standards and construction schedules, with technical screens completed before any deposit is committed
- Drive witness testing and permission-to-operate closeout so projects energize within days of construction completion, not weeks
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience with utility interconnection processes for distributed or utility-scale generation
- Deep familiarity with interconnection tariffs, net metering rules, and queue procedures in at least one major market
- Ability to read utility system impact studies critically: loading, voltage, protection, and flicker assessments
- Working knowledge of distribution and sub-transmission design: poles, conductors, reclosers, and metering
- Strong project tracking discipline across dozens of concurrent applications with different utilities and timelines
- Relationship skills for productive, persistent engagement with utility engineers and interconnection staff
- Technical writing for applications, comment responses, and dispute filings
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with FERC-jurisdictional large generator interconnection procedures
- Knowledge of IEEE 1547-2018 compliance testing and utility-specific ride-through requirements
- Familiarity with easement acquisition and right-of-way processes
- Background on the utility side of interconnection review
- Working knowledge of IEEE 1547-2018 and UL 1741 Supplement B certification
