Staff Mechanical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Cross-program mechanical architecture, advanced FEA, system-level tolerance analysis, DFM leadership, design review facilitation, root-cause analysis, CAD data management, design controls
About the role
You will operate as a staff mechanical engineer at a medical device company with several product teams sharing common mechanical platforms. Your influence deliberately crosses team boundaries: you will guide architecture on multiple programs at once, eliminate systemic design weaknesses at their root, and make every team's hardware more reliable and more manufacturable. This is a multiplier role for an engineer whose mechanisms work the first time, whose analyses predict reality, and whose judgment teams seek out before they commit to expensive tooling. You will drive mechanical design across multiple teams, ensuring interfaces, tolerances, and integration assumptions hold together at the system level. Your reviews will catch the cross-team issues that no single team can see.
What you will achieve
- Own shared mechanical platforms (enclosure systems, thermal solutions, mechanism libraries) used by multiple product teams, evolving them deliberately with each product generation based on field and manufacturing feedback.
- Lead architecture and design reviews across programs, catching systemic issues in materials selection, tolerancing strategy, and manufacturability before they reach production and cost real money.
- Drive root-cause resolution of field and manufacturing issues, tracing them to design practice rather than blaming process variation, and updating standards so the same failure mode never recurs anywhere in the company.
- Deliver reference designs, calculation templates, and analysis guides that accelerate new product development by months and raise the floor for every designer.
- Mentor senior engineers across teams, expanding the organization's capacity for hard mechanical problems without proportional hiring.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 8 to 12 years of mechanical design experience across more than one product line or team.
- Demonstrated cross-team technical influence through reviews, platforms, and standards that other engineers genuinely adopt.
- Deep analytical skills: FEA including nonlinear and contact problems, fatigue analysis, tolerance stacks, and thermal analysis.
- Experience building reusable designs, libraries, or platforms with documented adoption and measured benefit.
- Excellent technical writing: architecture documents, review records, and design guides that teams reference for years.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Medical device experience including design controls, risk management files, and DHF documentation.
- Familiarity with sterilization-compatible materials and processes (EtO, gamma, autoclave).
- Background in precision mechanisms, micro-molding, or miniature assemblies.
- Knowledge of biocompatibility requirements for patient-contacting materials.
