Shift Datacenter Technician
The job description
Tech stack. Shift operations and solo coverage, break/fix hardware repair, incident response and escalation, ticketing systems, Linux basics, handover documentation, lone-worker safety procedures, security rounds
About the role
You will cover the datacenter on rotating shifts at a cloud provider where the night shift fully owns the facility and there is no one to hand problems to until morning. When alerts fire at 3 AM, you are the entire response: assessing the situation, fixing what is within your capability, and escalating with precision when it is not. Your self-reliance, your judgment about when to wake an on-call engineer versus handling it yourself, and your handover quality determine whether the operation runs smoothly around the clock or accumulates surprises for the day shift. You will develop the self-reliance and judgment that define the best shift operators, earning the trust of engineers who sleep better knowing you are on duty. Your handover notes will be the gold standard other shifts emulate.
What you will achieve
- Handle all shift incidents within SLA with accurate triage, resolving the majority independently and escalating the remainder with complete diagnostic context that lets the on-call engineer act immediately.
- Maintain hardware repair throughput and quality on night and weekend shifts at the same standard as day shift, verified by identical QA sampling.
- Deliver shift handovers so complete and clear that the incoming shift needs no follow-up questions to understand overnight events, ongoing issues, and watch items.
- Exercise sound escalation judgment consistently: resolving independently when appropriate, engaging on-call engineers promptly when warranted, documented in after-action reviews.
- Keep the facility secure and compliant during low-staffing hours, following lone-worker check-in procedures, access controls, and security rounds exactly.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of datacenter, infrastructure operations, or similar 24/7 technical experience.
- Self-reliance and initiative: you assess unfamiliar situations calmly and act sensibly without supervision.
- Solid hardware troubleshooting skills across servers and basic network gear.
- Clear, thorough written communication for handovers, incident records, and shift logs.
- Good judgment about escalation: neither trigger-happy at 2 AM nor reluctant when the situation demands help.
- Willingness to work permanent or rotating night, weekend, and holiday shifts long-term.
Nice-to-haves
- Prior experience as the sole technical coverage on night shifts.
- Basic Linux and networking troubleshooting skills for after-hours triage.
- First aid, CPR, or emergency response training.
- Familiarity with security systems and incident reporting.
