Senior Nuclear Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Advanced reactor analysis codes, 10 CFR 50.59 and 50.90 processes, PRA fundamentals, design change packages, root cause analysis, mentoring frameworks, Python and engineering calculation tools
About the role
You will lead complex engineering efforts for a nuclear power utility as a recognized technical expert, taking ownership of the hardest analyses and mentoring the engineers around you. The team relies on you for independent review, difficult operability calls, and guidance on licensing strategy. You will drive major design changes, resolve cross-discipline issues, and represent engineering in plant decision-making. This role matters because senior engineers set the technical standard for the entire organization, and your judgment on the tough calls protects both safety and the plant's operating license. You will also represent engineering in interactions with INPO evaluators and peer teams, showcasing the organization's technical excellence. Your operating experience reviews will ensure the plant learns from industry events before they can repeat here. You will be the engineer others seek when analyses disagree, resolving technical disputes with authoritative, well-documented positions. Your influence will extend beyond your assigned work through the standards you set in every review you perform.
What you will achieve
- Lead major design change projects from concept through implementation with zero significant rework.
- Perform independent reviews catching substantive issues before they reach licensing or the regulator.
- Resolve complex cross-discipline technical issues that have stalled junior engineers, unblocking critical path work.
- Mentor three or more engineers measurably improving their analysis quality and independence.
- Deliver licensing submittals the NRC accepts with minimal questions through technical excellence and clear writing.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 5 to 8 years in nuclear engineering with demonstrated technical leadership on complex projects.
- Deep expertise in at least one domain: reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, systems, or safety analysis.
- Proven ability to lead design changes through 10 CFR 50.59 or 50.90 processes successfully.
- Experience performing independent technical reviews that genuinely improve quality.
- Strong mentoring skills with a track record of developing less experienced engineers.
- Excellent technical writing for licensing documents, safety evaluations, and design reports.
- Sound judgment under pressure: you make the right call on operability when the plant needs an answer.
Nice-to-haves
- Professional Engineer license.
- SRO license or certification.
- Experience as a design authority or technical lead on major modifications.
- Familiarity with risk-informed regulation and its practical applications.
