Senior Mechanical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Advanced CAD (Creo or SolidWorks), nonlinear FEA, GD&T expertise, tolerance analysis, DFM across processes, design review leadership, supplier technical management, kinematic simulation
About the role
You will be a senior mechanical designer at a company developing automated warehouse robotics where every gram of mass and every millimeter of envelope directly affects speed, battery life, and payload. You will own the most challenging mechanisms on the platform, set the standard for design quality that the whole team follows, and mentor junior engineers through their first production releases. Your mechanisms will run millions of cycles in demanding duty, and your analysis is what guarantees they survive. You will own complex mechanical subsystems end to end, making the hard tradeoff calls between performance, cost, weight, and schedule that define product success. Junior engineers will look to your design reviews and technical judgment as the standard to meet.
What you will achieve
- Own the design of critical mechanisms (lift, drive, or manipulation subsystems) from architecture through production, meeting life, load, cost, and serviceability targets simultaneously.
- Cut prototype cycles across your programs by leading analysis-driven design: FEA, tolerance stacks, and kinematic simulation completed and reviewed before any metal is cut.
- Mentor two to three junior engineers deliberately, with visible improvement in their design quality, analysis rigor, and independence within one year.
- Drive supplier technical relationships for castings, moldings, and precision machined parts, resolving quality issues at the source with data instead of accepting recurring deviations.
- Deliver measurable cost and weight reductions on mature mechanisms through optimization and smart material choices, without sacrificing reliability, safety factors, or service access.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 5 to 8 years of mechanical design experience with mechanisms or products shipped to production at meaningful volumes.
- Expert-level CAD and drawing skills with deep GD&T knowledge applied to real manufacturing constraints and inspection methods.
- Strong analytical ability: FEA for structural and fatigue problems, hand calculations for quick decisions, tolerance analysis for complex assemblies.
- Experience designing for high-volume or high-reliability manufacturing processes with their process controls.
- Proven mentoring ability with concrete evidence of engineers you developed.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with mobile robots, electric vehicles, or other mass- and envelope-constrained systems.
- Familiarity with composite materials, overmolding, or advanced joining methods.
- Background in structured value engineering programs with documented savings.
- Knowledge of safety standards for machinery operating near people.
