Senior Energy Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. ETAP, PVsyst, HOMER Pro, PSS/E, Python, AutoCAD, project finance models, technical due diligence frameworks
About the role
You will join an energy company as a senior technical owner across a portfolio of generation and infrastructure projects. The team looks to you for the hard calls: which technologies to bet on, which designs are buildable, and which risks are acceptable. This role matters because your judgment gates capital deployment, your reviews catch the flaws junior engineers miss, and your standards set the quality bar for the entire engineering organization. As a senior member of the team, you will set technical direction on the hardest projects and serve as the escalation point when studies produce ambiguous or politically inconvenient results. The role includes owning client relationships at the technical level, defending your analysis in front of executives who will probe every assumption. You will drive process improvements, from calculation templates to QA procedures, that lift the output quality of engineers around you. Your project scoping judgment will also matter: knowing which analyses are essential and which are gold-plating keeps proposals competitive and delivery profitable.
What you will achieve
- Lead engineering for 200+ MW of projects per year from early development through financial close, owning technical risk registers and mitigation plans
- Cut design review cycles by 30 percent by establishing stage-gate criteria, review checklists, and decision templates the team runs without you, with assumptions documented to a standard that survives independent review
- Own lender and investor technical due diligence responses, closing findings that unblock financing on schedule
- Drive technology strategy: evaluate emerging generation, storage, and grid technologies and recommend adoption with ROI-backed business cases, mentoring the assigned engineer through each review cycle
- Mentor 3 to 5 engineers, raising the team's output quality while growing their independence on complex analyses
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 5 to 8 years of experience in energy project engineering with multiple built projects across at least two technologies
- Expert-level command of power systems analysis, energy modeling, or plant design in your domain
- Track record of leading technical workstreams through financing, with direct lender or investor interaction
- Ability to set engineering standards, review others' work critically, and defend decisions under scrutiny
- Deep familiarity with interconnection, permitting, and construction interfaces for energy projects
- Strong commercial instincts: you connect engineering choices to LCOE, IRR, and risk-adjusted returns
- Mentorship experience with junior engineers, including delegating and reviewing without micromanaging
Nice-to-haves
- PE license in at least one state
- Experience across development, owner's engineering, and operations phases
- Knowledge of project finance structures and tax equity technical requirements
- Published papers, conference presentations, or industry working group participation
- PE license or equivalent professional registration
