The job description
Tech stack. C/C++17, ARM Cortex-M/A, Zephyr/FreeRTOS, CMake, Yocto basics, CAN/FD, TCP/IP, Rust exposure, HIL testing
About the role
You will join an industrial automation company whose controllers run factories and energy infrastructure around the clock. The firmware organization is the technical core of the business, and senior engineers set the bar for code quality, architecture, and delivery rigor. This role matters because a single firmware regression can idle a production line, so the team needs engineers who design for determinism and prove correctness before hardware ships.
What you will achieve
- Lead the firmware architecture for a new multi-core Cortex-M controller platform serving three product families, delivering first-silicon software within two tapeout-driven quarters and zero architecture rework after tapeout
- Drive real-time determinism across the system, holding control-loop jitter under 10 microseconds measured on production hardware across temperature and voltage corners
- Cut integration defects by building an automated hardware-in-the-loop regression suite that covers 90% of critical control paths and runs green on every pull request
- Own the networking stack integration (TCP/IP, Modbus, CAN FD), reducing field communication failures by 40% year over year as measured by support ticket volume
- Mentor four mid-level engineers through structured design reviews and pairing rotations, raising the team's review catch rate on concurrency bugs by half within two quarters
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 5-8 years shipping embedded firmware, including at least two full product cycles from first bring-up through mass production and sustaining support
- Deep C/C++ fluency with modern practices (RAII, constexpr, static analysis clean) applied in memory-constrained environments without exceptions or RTTI
- Proven RTOS expertise: priority inversion avoidance, deterministic IPC design, and worst-case execution time reasoning backed by measurement
- Experience architecting firmware across multi-core MCUs or heterogeneous SoCs (Cortex-M plus Cortex-A, or MCU plus DSP), including inter-core communication
- Hands-on CAN/CAN FD or industrial Ethernet protocol work with conformance or interoperability testing against third-party devices
- Proficiency with HIL test rigs, fault injection, and long-soak reliability testing that runs for days and produces trustworthy pass/fail verdicts
- A record of leading technical designs end to end: writing the design doc, driving the review, and shepherding implementation to merge
Nice-to-haves
- Rust for embedded or MISRA C++ familiarity, with opinions about where each fits in a firmware codebase
- Experience with safety-adjacent processes such as hazard analysis or FMEA, even without formal certification
- Contributions to open-source RTOS or embedded libraries that other engineers actually use
