Senior Datacenter Technician
The job description
Tech stack. Advanced hardware diagnostics, Linux administration, network troubleshooting fundamentals, ticketing and SLA management, technician mentoring, root-cause analysis, automation scripting (Bash/Python), DCIM tools
About the role
You will be a senior technician at a colocation datacenter provider where enterprise customers with strict contracts trust you with their infrastructure. You will handle the hardest break/fix cases that stump the standard playbook, own complex deployment and migration projects, and mentor junior technicians into reliable operators. Your technical judgment sets the standard for the shift, your documentation becomes the runbook others follow, and customers feel the difference in your uptime numbers and your communication quality. You will be the technical authority customers meet during audits and site visits, representing the operation's competence with clear explanations of your processes. Your judgment will guide capacity decisions when hardware refresh cycles and failure trends collide with budget constraints. You will also contribute to hiring, interviewing technician candidates and evaluating their hands-on skills against the real demands of the job.
What you will achieve
- Resolve the most complex hardware and infrastructure issues, including multi-component failures, intermittent faults, and problems spanning server, network, and facilities domains that others cannot isolate.
- Mentor three to four junior technicians deliberately, raising their diagnostic accuracy, procedural discipline, and independence measurably within one year.
- Lead complex deployment projects: rack builds, hardware refreshes, customer migrations, and decommissions executed without unplanned downtime or SLA impact.
- Drive SLA performance for your area above 99.9 percent through proactive identification of at-risk hardware and preventive action before failures occur.
- Write clear technical documentation and runbooks that make complex procedures repeatable by the whole team, reducing escalations for known issue types.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 5 to 8 years of datacenter or enterprise hardware operations experience with increasing responsibility.
- Expert-level hardware troubleshooting across servers, storage arrays, and networking gear from multiple vendors.
- Working Linux administration skills: log analysis, service management, and basic performance troubleshooting.
- Proven ability to mentor technicians with visible improvement in their capability and confidence.
- Strong customer communication skills appropriate for colocation environments with demanding enterprise clients.
- Technical certifications or equivalent demonstrated expertise recognized by peers.
Nice-to-haves
- Scripting ability (Bash, Python) for operational automation and data analysis.
- Experience with DCIM tools, capacity management, and power/cooling awareness.
- Background in structured cabling standards and fiber plant maintenance.
- Familiarity with ITIL practices for incident and problem management.
