The job description
Tech stack. RF IC design, LNAs, mixers, VCOs and PLLs, Cadence Virtuoso, SpectreRF, EM simulation, impedance matching, advanced CMOS and BiCMOS
About the role
You will design radio-frequency integrated circuits at a semiconductor company, creating the low-noise amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, and synthesizers that connect products to the wireless world. RF designers work in a domain governed by electromagnetics as much as circuit theory: their designs must achieve noise figures, linearity, and phase noise targets while managing impedance matching, coupling, and package parasitics. You will design RF blocks from architecture through EM-aware layout to lab validation with network analyzers and spectrum measurements.
What you will achieve
- Design RF front-end blocks including LNAs, mixers, VGAs, and power amplifiers meeting noise figure, gain, linearity, and power consumption targets for the target wireless standard.
- Design frequency synthesis blocks including VCOs, PLLs, and dividers with phase noise and spurious performance that satisfy system-level requirements with margin.
- Perform EM simulation of critical passives, interconnects, and coupling paths, incorporating electromagnetic effects into the design flow rather than discovering them on silicon.
- Optimize impedance matching networks for maximum power transfer and minimum noise, accounting for package, board, and antenna interface realities.
- Validate RF designs on silicon with comprehensive S-parameter, noise figure, linearity, and phase noise measurements, correlating against simulation models.
- Collaborate with system architects on link budgets and specification partitioning, ensuring block-level targets serve genuine system performance.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 5 to 8 years of experience in RF IC design with shipped wireless products.
- Deep understanding of RF fundamentals: noise, linearity, matching, stability, and oscillator phase noise theory.
- Strong circuit design skills for LNAs, mixers, VCOs, and PLLs in CMOS or BiCMOS.
- Experience with EM simulation tools and EM-aware design methodology for RF layouts.
- Proficiency with SpectreRF analyses including PSS, PAC, PNOISE, and harmonic balance concepts.
- RF bench measurement expertise with VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and noise figure meters.
- Knowledge of wireless standards such as WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular, or UWB and their RF requirements.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with mmWave design or phased array front ends.
- Familiarity with RF system modeling and behavioral simulation.
- Knowledge of packaging technologies for RF performance such as flip-chip or integrated passives.
- Background in digital predistortion or digitally assisted RF techniques.
