Reactor Operations Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Plant operating procedures, technical specifications, reactivity management, simulator training, outage coordination, power maneuvering analysis, operations work management
About the role
You will support the safe operation of the reactor for a nuclear power utility, working alongside licensed operators as the engineering voice in the control room's orbit. The team supports startups, shutdowns, power maneuvers, and outage execution with engineering analyses and troubleshooting. You will develop procedures, analyze transients, and respond to emergent issues around the clock when the plant needs you. This role matters because the reactor operates safely only when engineering and operations work as one team, and your support gives operators the technical backing to make confident decisions. You will also staff the technical support center during drills and real events, providing the engineering assessments emergency response depends on. Your post-trip reviews will be thorough and blameless, extracting every lesson from unplanned transients. You will maintain the reactivity management program with the precision the core deserves, because reactivity events are never minor. Your operator aids and curve books will be accurate, current, and genuinely useful in the control room.
What you will achieve
- Support plant startups and shutdowns with engineering coverage that resolves issues without delaying critical path.
- Develop and revise operating procedures improving clarity and reducing operator error-likely situations.
- Analyze plant transients rapidly during emergent events, providing operations with accurate technical assessments.
- Optimize power maneuvering strategies reducing thermal stress on components while meeting grid demands.
- Deliver reactivity management plans for startups and power changes executed without reactivity events.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in reactor operations support, operations engineering, or licensed operator roles.
- Strong understanding of plant systems, technical specifications, and operating license requirements.
- Experience with reactor startup, shutdown, and power maneuvering evolutions.
- Ability to perform under pressure: emergent plant issues do not wait for comfortable timelines.
- Excellent communication with control room staff: clear, concise, and technically accurate.
- Procedure writing skills producing documents operators can execute reliably under stress.
- Respect for the operator's authority: you advise and support, never override.
Nice-to-haves
- SRO license or certification, active or previously held.
- Simulator instructor experience or training program development.
- Experience with outage execution in operations or work management roles.
- Knowledge of grid operations and dispatcher coordination.
