Radiation Protection Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. ALARA planning tools, dosimetry systems (TLD, electronic), shielding calculation codes, 10 CFR 20 requirements, contamination control procedures, survey instrumentation, Python for dose trending
About the role
You will protect workers and the public from radiation exposure at a nuclear power plant, engineering the controls that keep doses as low as reasonably achievable. The team plans radiological work, designs shielding, monitors effluents, and responds to contamination events. You will review work packages, optimize outage shielding, and ensure the plant meets every regulatory limit. This role matters because the trust the nuclear industry holds depends on demonstrably protecting people, and your engineering keeps every worker's exposure justified, optimized, and limited. You will also oversee the respiratory protection and internal dosimetry programs, ensuring accurate dose assignment for every worker. Your trending of dose data will identify jobs and areas where additional engineering controls can drive exposures lower still. You will review every high-dose work package personally, challenging planners to find dose-saving alternatives before approving. Your relationships with craft workers will be built on credibility earned in the field, not authority asserted from an office.
What you will achieve
- Keep collective and individual worker doses below administrative goals, achieving year-over-year ALARA improvements.
- Design shielding and work plans for high-dose outage jobs cutting projected exposure 25 percent versus historical baselines.
- Maintain environmental monitoring and effluent programs with zero regulatory exceedances across all reporting periods.
- Resolve contamination events with rapid, technically sound responses that prevent spread and minimize cleanup scope.
- Deliver radiation worker training content that measurably improves field compliance with radiological postings.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in health physics, radiation protection, or radiological engineering roles.
- Thorough knowledge of 10 CFR 20 requirements and ALARA principles applied in practice.
- Experience with dosimetry systems, survey instrumentation, and contamination control techniques.
- Ability to perform shielding calculations and evaluate radiological work plans technically.
- Understanding of radioactive effluent pathways and environmental monitoring programs.
- Strong field presence: you walk jobs down, verify conditions, and earn the trust of craft workers.
- Clear communication skills for explaining radiological requirements to non-specialists.
Nice-to-haves
- CHP certification or NRRPT registration, completed or actively pursued.
- Experience with outage ALARA planning for steam generator or reactor vessel work.
- Familiarity with radioactive waste characterization and shipping requirements.
- Knowledge of emergency preparedness dose assessment tools.
