R&D eVTOL Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. novel eVTOL configurations, rapid prototyping, technology maturation, CFD, MATLAB, Python, patent development, subscale flight demonstrators
About the role
You will join an eVTOL aircraft company to work ahead of the production programs, maturing the technologies the next-generation aircraft will depend on. This team explores novel configurations, builds subscale demonstrators, and de-risks everything from new propulsor concepts to advanced materials. Your work turns research questions into product-ready answers with data the program teams can commit to, and your prototypes will fly while the production aircraft is still on paper. You will have the freedom to explore approaches the production program cannot risk, paired with the obligation to prove your ideas with hardware and data rather than slides.
What you will achieve
- Mature a key technology from concept to demonstrated prototype, retiring the technical risk before the production program depends on it.
- Design and fly subscale demonstrators that answer specific vehicle-level questions, delivering data that changes configuration decisions.
- Publish internal technology assessments that give leadership a clear-eyed view of readiness, cost, and risk for emerging approaches.
- File patents on novel concepts your work produces, building the company's intellectual property position in electric aviation.
- Transfer proven technologies to the production engineering teams with documentation and mentorship that make adoption stick. You stay engaged through first implementation, resolving the integration issues that research prototypes always hide.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 4 to 7 years in aerospace R&D, advanced concepts, or prototype development, with hardware you designed, built, and tested.
- Demonstrated ability to take an ambiguous research question and turn it into a testable hypothesis with a prototype.
- Strong fundamentals in at least one domain such as aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, or controls, with curiosity across the rest.
- Experience with rapid prototyping methods and the judgment to know when a quick test beats a long analysis.
- Technical writing that turns experimental results into decisions, not just data dumps.
- Comfort with uncertainty: pursuing parallel paths and killing the ones that do not pan out without attachment.
Nice-to-haves
- Published papers or patents in electric aviation or related fields.
- Experience with technology readiness level assessments for aerospace programs.
- Background transitioning research prototypes into certified products.
- Familiarity with government research funding mechanisms such as SBIR or AFWERX.
