The job description
Tech stack. Research prototyping, novel circuit architectures, silicon test chips, measurement-driven iteration, Cadence Virtuoso, Python/MATLAB analysis, publication
About the role
You will join the advanced research group of a semiconductor company, the team that prototypes the circuit architectures products will ship three to five years from now. Your work lives on test chips and measurement benches rather than product tapeouts, but every experiment is aimed at a product need. This role matters because the company's future differentiation is invented here: your prototypes decide which bets the product roadmap can place. Not every research bet pays off, but the ones that do reshape the product line for a decade.
What you will achieve
- Deliver silicon-proven research prototypes that demonstrate step-function improvements in power, precision, or bandwidth over the state of the art
- Drive at least one architecture per year from concept through test-chip measurement, with results that directly inform product roadmaps
- Cut research cycle time by building fast-turnaround test-chip methodologies: shared shuttles, reusable measurement setups, and rapid analysis
- Publish or patent your breakthroughs, building the company's technical reputation while protecting its IP position
- Partner with product teams to transfer proven concepts, staying involved through the first product tapeout that adopts your architecture
- Build measurement and analysis infrastructure that lets the whole research group iterate faster and share results cleanly
- Maintain a research portfolio with balanced risk: steady incremental wins alongside ambitious long-shot architectures
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 4-7 years of analog IC design with a record of novel circuit work: test chips, publications, patents, or shipped differentiating products
- Strong research instincts: you identify the fundamental limit in a problem and design experiments that test it directly
- Deep circuit creativity across at least two analog domains (converters, references, amplifiers, power, high-speed)
- Proficiency in Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre plus strong data-analysis skills in Python or MATLAB for measurement work
- Excellent technical writing for papers, patents, and internal research reports that influence roadmap decisions
- Comfort with ambiguity: you define your own success criteria and pivot when silicon disagrees with theory
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent research depth demonstrated by publications and prototypes
Nice-to-haves
- University collaboration experience or an active presence in the circuits research community (ISSCC, VLSI Symposium, JSSC)
- Experience with emerging devices or processes: GaN, photonics integration, or cryogenic CMOS
- Prior technology-transfer work moving research concepts into shipping products
