Product Design Electrical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. DFM and DFA, cost engineering and should-costing, consumer product EE, schematic and layout for high volume, agency certification (UL, FCC, CE), tolerance analysis, supplier collaboration, EVT/DVT/PVT
About the role
You will design the electronics inside mass-market consumer products at a company shipping millions of smart home devices per year. Your designs must be right, cheap, and manufacturable at extreme scale: every cent of BOM cost matters across millions of units, every assembly step is scrutinized for seconds, and a one-percent field failure rate is a full-scale crisis. You will own the electrical design from concept through production ramp, optimizing relentlessly for cost, yield, and quality while racing competitors to the next product cycle. You will take products from concept through production release, owning the electrical design through prototyping, validation, and manufacturing handoff. Your designs will balance performance, cost, and manufacturability so the product succeeds in the market, not just in the lab.
What you will achieve
- Ship consumer electronics at million-unit scale with field return rates below target, through disciplined derating, margin analysis, and validation that anticipates real-world abuse.
- Drive BOM cost reductions of 15 percent or more across product generations through component selection, functional integration, and supplier negotiation support backed by should-cost analysis.
- Achieve first-pass agency certification (UL, FCC, CE) through pre-compliance testing and design-for-certification practices built into the layout from day one.
- Deliver designs with manufacturing yields above 99 percent by designing for assembly: panelization-friendly layouts, fully testable circuits, robust soldering processes, and clear assembly documentation.
- Resolve production line stoppages within hours during ramp, applying root-cause fixes validated to hold at full volume rather than temporary workarounds.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing electronics for high-volume consumer or similarly cost-sensitive products.
- Strong cost engineering instincts: BOM analysis, should-costing, and disciplined trade-off decisions between cost, performance, and risk.
- Experience designing for manufacturing and assembly at contract manufacturers, including DFM reviews and NPI builds.
- Working knowledge of agency certification requirements and pre-compliance testing methods.
- Solid fundamentals in power, digital, and analog design applied to compact, cost-optimized products.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with wireless consumer products (WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee) including coexistence design.
- Familiarity with battery-powered product design, battery management, and power budgeting for long life.
- Background in failure analysis for high-volume field returns with statistical methods.
- Knowledge of sustainability and repairability design trends in consumer electronics.
