Power Systems Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. ETAP, SKM PowerTools, PSS/E, ASPEN OneLiner, AutoCAD, SEL relays and settings software, arc-flash analysis tools
About the role
You will join the power systems group of an engineering firm serving utilities, industrial plants, and large commercial facilities. The team designs and analyzes electrical distribution and transmission systems from 480 V switchgear to 230 kV substations. This role matters because reliable power is invisible until it fails, and your studies, relay settings, and designs are what keep factories running, hospitals lit, and grids stable when faults occur. Your studies will span steady-state, dynamic, and electromagnetic transient domains depending on what each project demands, from routine load flow to inverter-heavy microgrid stability work. You will support arc-flash hazard analysis and mitigation design, since safety findings often drive equipment selection and labeling decisions. The role includes mentoring junior engineers on study methodology and reviewing their models before results reach clients. You will also standardize the team's study templates and assumption registers, so reports remain consistent and defensible regardless of who ran the numbers.
What you will achieve
- Complete power system studies (load flow, short circuit, coordination, arc flash) for 15 to 20 client facilities per year with reports delivered on schedule and within budget
- Reduce client outage exposure by designing protection schemes with selective coordination verified across the full fault current range, peer-reviewed against the team's assumption register before issue
- Own relay settings, CT/PT sizing, and protection one-lines for switchgear and substation projects up to 230 kV
- Cut arc-flash incident energy levels by 30 percent or more on retrofit projects through device setting optimization and equipment upgrades, with mitigation options ranked by cost and implementation effort
- Deliver construction-ready drawing packages and specifications that contractors can bid and build without RFI churn
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in power systems design, analysis, or utility/industrial electrical engineering
- Deep understanding of symmetrical components, per-unit analysis, and protective relaying principles
- Proficiency with ETAP or SKM PowerTools for load flow, short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies
- Knowledge of IEEE standards: 242 (Buff Book), 1584 (arc flash), C37 series (protection), and 3000 series (industrial power)
- Ability to develop protective device settings for overcurrent, differential, and distance relays
- Familiarity with substation physical design: buswork, grounding grids, control buildings, and clearances
- Strong client-facing communication for presenting study findings and defending recommendations
Nice-to-haves
- PE license or EIT with a clear path to licensure
- Experience with SEL, GE Multilin, or ABB relay platforms and settings software
- Utility distribution planning or transmission design exposure
- Familiarity with NERC PRC standards for protection system maintenance and testing
- Familiarity with ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower advanced modules for harmonics and transient stability
