Power Management Firmware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. PMIC register-level control, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), battery fuel gauging algorithms, multi-stage charging profiles, multi-rail power sequencing, thermal-aware power policies, precision current profiling, USB Power Delivery negotiation
About the role
You will own the complete energy story of battery-powered devices, where your firmware algorithms directly determine headline product capabilities: usable battery life, charging speed, and thermal comfort under load. Power management firmware engineers develop sophisticated charging algorithms, accurate fuel gauging, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling, and the intelligent policies balancing raw performance against heat generation and long-term battery health. You will characterize genuine power consumption across realistic user scenarios, validate relentlessly against customer expectations, and drive measurable, demonstrable improvements with every firmware release. When reviewers praise genuine all-day battery life, your firmware is what earned that praise.
What you will achieve
- Develop production charging algorithms encompassing CC/CV charge profiles, JEITA temperature-compensated charging, and fast-charge protocol negotiation, meeting stringent safety and speed targets simultaneously
- Deliver highly accurate battery fuel gauging through coulomb counting, voltage-based modeling, or impedance tracking techniques, validated rigorously against real-world battery aging data
- Implement intelligent DVFS and thermal throttling policies that balance computational performance, device skin temperature, and battery longevity dynamically across diverse workloads
- Design robust power sequencing firmware for complex multi-rail systems with correct power-up ordering, continuous rail monitoring, and comprehensive fault handling
- Characterize system power consumption across authentic user scenarios, driving validated, measurable battery life improvements with each successive release
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in power management firmware, battery management systems, or deeply power-aware embedded development roles
- Thorough understanding of lithium battery chemistries: charging profile requirements, absolute safety limits, aging mechanisms, and temperature effects on usable lifetime
- Hands-on experience with power management ICs: I2C/SPI register-level control, switching regulator configuration, interrupt handling, and fault response design
- Knowledge of fuel gauge algorithm families: coulomb counting approaches, impedance tracking methods, or model-based state-of-charge estimation techniques
- Familiarity with DVFS implementation, clock gating strategies, power domain partitioning, and system-level power optimization methodologies
- Ability to measure power consumption with laboratory precision: current profiling instrumentation correlated exactly with firmware execution states and code paths
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Nice-to-haves
- Experience implementing USB Power Delivery contract negotiation or Qi wireless charging firmware stacks
- Familiarity with battery safety certification standards: UL 2054, IEC 62133, or UN38.3 transportation testing requirements
- Knowledge of energy harvesting system design and maximum power point tracking algorithm implementation
- Experience with system-level thermal modeling and sustained-load throttling validation methodologies
