Power Electronics Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Converter topologies (buck, boost, flyback, LLC, PFC), SiC and GaN devices, magnetics design, LTspice and PLECS, thermal design, EMC for switchers, digital power control, efficiency measurement
About the role
You will design power conversion stages at a company building fast chargers and power supplies for commercial equipment deployed in the hundreds of thousands. Efficiency, thermal performance, and cost per watt are the metrics that decide whether the product wins against entrenched competitors. You will own converters from topology selection through magnetics design, layout guidance, and validation, and your designs will run for a decade in environments that punish weak thermal and EMC design. You will push converter efficiency and power density through careful topology selection, magnetics design, and thermal optimization validated by measurement. Your designs must survive real-world abuse: input transients, load dumps, and thermal cycling that separate robust products from fragile ones.
What you will achieve
- Design and validate isolated and non-isolated converters meeting efficiency targets above 94 percent at full load, verified by calibrated measurement across line, load, and temperature corners.
- Deliver custom magnetics designs (transformers and inductors) that meet loss, saturation, and thermal targets while staying within aggressive cost budgets negotiated with vendors.
- Achieve conducted and radiated EMC compliance on switching designs through layout discipline, snubbing, input filtering, and spread-spectrum techniques where appropriate, with margin to spare.
- Reduce power-stage cost year over year by qualifying second-source MOSFETs, diodes, and controllers with full characterization, protecting the supply chain against shortages and price increases.
- Build automated efficiency and thermal test rigs that cut validation time per design revision by half while improving measurement repeatability.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing switch-mode power supplies or converters that shipped in volume production.
- Deep understanding of converter topologies, control modes, loop compensation, and stability analysis including bode measurements.
- Hands-on magnetics experience: core selection, winding design, loss estimation, and productive collaboration with magnetics vendors.
- Strong bench skills with high-voltage and high-current measurements performed safely and accurately.
- Knowledge of thermal design: heatsinking, airflow management, TIM selection, and semiconductor junction temperature budgeting.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with wide-bandgap devices (GaN, SiC) in production designs, including gate drive subtleties.
- Familiarity with digital power control using DSPs or dedicated digital controllers.
- Background in PFC stages, bidirectional converters, or resonant topologies.
- Knowledge of safety agency requirements for mains-connected power supplies.
