Power and Cooling Technician
The job description
Tech stack. PDU and RPP maintenance and load management, CRAC/CRAH operation and maintenance, chilled water and DX cooling basics, airflow management and containment, power monitoring and trending, electrical safety, thermal imaging, PUE optimization
About the role
You will own power distribution and cooling delivery at a colocation datacenter where customers pay for every kilowatt and every degree of reliability. Your systems are where IT load meets facility capacity: the PDUs feeding every rack and the CRAC units holding temperatures in range. You will monitor loads continuously, balance phases before breakers trip, optimize airflow and setpoints for efficiency, and respond decisively when the thermal envelope threatens to break during heat waves or equipment failures. You will become the site expert on power and thermal behavior, the person engineers consult when planning capacity or troubleshooting hot spots. Your optimization work will show up directly in the site's PUE trend and energy costs.
What you will achieve
- Maintain PDU and branch circuit loading within design limits across all halls, preventing overload trips through proactive monitoring, trending, and rebalancing before limits are reached.
- Keep datacenter temperatures within ASHRAE recommended ranges at every sensor point through CRAC optimization, airflow management, and disciplined containment practices.
- Improve site PUE year over year through measurable actions: containment improvements, setpoint optimization, blanking panel discipline, and airflow balancing verified by before-and-after data.
- Respond to thermal and power alarms within SLA, resolving root causes (failed fans, blocked airflow, unbalanced loads) rather than merely acknowledging alerts.
- Execute power and cooling maintenance windows safely and without impact to customer loads, with complete MOP documentation and rollback plans.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years working with datacenter power distribution, cooling systems, or critical facilities operations.
- Understanding of three-phase power, load balancing, power factor, and PDU/RPP architectures and their limits.
- Knowledge of CRAC/CRAH operation, psychrometrics basics, and hot-aisle/cold-aisle airflow principles.
- Electrical safety awareness for work around energized distribution equipment and rotating machinery.
- Ability to interpret BMS trends, power monitoring data, and thermal images to find problems early.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications valued.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with chilled water systems, cooling towers, or DX refrigeration maintenance.
- Familiarity with CFD-informed airflow optimization or aisle containment retrofits.
- EPA 608 certification for refrigerant handling.
- Knowledge of ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines and their application.
