Packaging Mechanical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Enclosure design, IP and NEMA ratings, drop and shock testing, thermal management in sealed enclosures, EMC-aware mechanical design, sealing and gasketing, DFM for die casting/extrusion/sheet metal
About the role
You will design the enclosures and mechanical packaging at a company building ruggedized networking equipment for outdoor and industrial installations from deserts to offshore platforms. Your housings protect sensitive electronics from rain, dust, solar loading, and vandalism while managing heat without fans in sealed boxes. You will own enclosure architecture from concept through tooling and production, proving ingress protection, thermal performance, and structural robustness with testing that mirrors the worst field conditions the product will ever see. You will design protective packaging that survives the distribution environment, validated by ISTA testing that proves performance before products ship. Your packaging will balance protection, cost, and sustainability.
What you will achieve
- Deliver enclosure designs achieving IP66/IP67 ratings validated by third-party testing, with thermal performance keeping all electronics within specification at 50C ambient plus solar loading.
- Design die-cast, extruded, or sheet metal housings optimized for tooling investment and piece-part cost at volume, with should-cost analysis supporting sourcing decisions.
- Pass drop, vibration, and mechanical shock testing per applicable standards on the first attempt through disciplined structural design and validated simulation.
- Integrate antennas, connectors, cable glands, mounting hardware, and thermal paths into clean, serviceable, tamper-resistant packages that installers praise rather than curse.
- Reduce enclosure cost generation over generation through design simplification, process changes, and supplier competition while maintaining every environmental rating.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing enclosures or mechanical packaging for electronic products with environmental requirements.
- Strong knowledge of sealing design: gasket groove design, O-ring compression, compression set over life, and tolerance control for reliable IP ratings.
- Experience with thermal design of sealed enclosures: conduction paths, heat spreading, heat pipes, and solar loading analysis.
- Familiarity with die casting, aluminum extrusion, and sheet metal design practices including draft, wall thickness, and tolerances.
- Understanding of EMC implications of enclosure design: seam conductivity, aperture sizing, and grounding continuity.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with outdoor telecom, industrial, or military electronics packaging.
- Familiarity with IK impact ratings and vandal-resistant design techniques.
- Background in antenna integration within or on metal enclosures.
- Knowledge of conformal coating and potting for harsh environments.
