Nuclear Systems Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. System health monitoring, P&IDs and system descriptions, root cause analysis methods, ASME codes, pump and valve engineering, vibration analysis, plant data historians
About the role
You will own the health of critical plant systems for a nuclear power utility, serving as the technical expert operators and maintenance call when something degrades. The team monitors system performance, trends degradation, plans preventive maintenance, and resolves emergent issues. You will walk down systems, analyze data, and make the engineering calls that keep equipment reliable. This role matters because system reliability is plant reliability, and your vigilance catches the small degradations before they become the events that challenge safety systems. You will also own the system notebooks and design basis documents for your assigned systems, keeping them accurate through every modification. Your walkdowns will be thorough and frequent, because the best trending data in the world cannot replace eyes on the equipment. You will lead the system engineering response to industry operating experience, determining whether fleet events could occur at your plant. Your maintenance rule evaluations will be technically rigorous, correctly classifying systems and setting goals that genuinely reflect safety significance.
What you will achieve
- Maintain assigned systems above 98 percent availability through proactive monitoring and preventive engineering actions.
- Resolve emergent equipment issues with technically sound operability determinations completed within required timeframes.
- Trend system performance data to predict failures, eliminating at least three unplanned maintenance events per year.
- Optimize preventive maintenance tasks based on actual failure modes, reducing unnecessary work 20 percent.
- Deliver system health reports that give plant management a clear, honest picture of equipment condition.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in systems engineering, plant engineering, or maintenance engineering at a power plant.
- Strong mechanical or electrical fundamentals applied to real rotating equipment, valves, and heat exchangers.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, system descriptions, and design basis documents fluently.
- Experience with root cause analysis methods and corrective action program processes.
- Data analysis skills for trending performance and identifying degradation before failure.
- Field orientation: you inspect equipment personally rather than diagnosing from a desk.
- Ownership mentality: your systems are your responsibility, and it shows in their condition.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with predictive maintenance technologies such as vibration analysis or thermography.
- Familiarity with ASME Section XI inservice inspection requirements.
- Knowledge of pump, valve, or heat exchanger design and failure mechanisms.
- SRO certification or operations experience.
