The job description

Tech stack. MCNP and MAVRIC shielding codes, point kernel methods, 10 CFR 20 dose limits, ALARA design principles, streaming and skyshine analysis, CAD for shield modeling, Python automation

About the role

You will design the barriers between radiation and people for a nuclear utility or architect-engineer firm, calculating the shielding that keeps every area of the plant within dose limits. The team evaluates new designs, verifies existing shielding, and resolves streaming paths that models miss. You will build transport models, optimize shield thicknesses, and support construction with practical guidance. This role matters because shielding is invisible when it works and catastrophic when it does not, and your calculations are what workers trust with their long-term health. You will also perform shielding verifications during construction, confirming that as-built conditions match your models. Your ALARA design reviews will challenge project teams to reduce doses during the design phase when changes are cheapest. You will develop the shielding basis documents that future engineers rely on, clearly recording every assumption. Your streaming analyses will find the paths that bulk shielding calculations miss, because radiation exploits every gap.
