Nuclear Plant Modifications Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. 10 CFR 50.59 evaluations, design change packages, CAD and 3D modeling, procurement engineering, installation work packages, post-modification testing, configuration management
About the role
You will engineer the physical changes that keep the plant modern and reliable for a nuclear power utility, owning modifications from the initial idea through installation and testing. The team replaces aging equipment, implements design improvements, and ensures every change preserves the licensing basis. You will develop design packages, evaluate licensing impacts, and support field implementation. This role matters because plants operate for 60 to 80 years only through continuous thoughtful modification, and your engineering ensures every change makes the plant better without introducing new problems. You will also coordinate factory acceptance testing for major replacement components, verifying performance before equipment ever reaches the site. Your equivalency evaluations will be technically rigorous, ensuring replacement parts truly match the original design requirements. You will track modification effectiveness after installation, confirming the intended improvements materialize. Your installation work packages will anticipate field conditions, because the modification that looks clean on paper must also work in a crowded plant. Your closeout reports will capture lessons learned while details remain fresh.
What you will achieve
- Deliver modification design packages on schedule with complete licensing evaluations and installation instructions.
- Complete 10 CFR 50.59 screenings and evaluations with technically sound conclusions regulators respect.
- Support installation and post-modification testing with field issues resolved without extending outage windows.
- Manage procurement engineering for safety-related components ensuring qualified parts arrive on time.
- Maintain configuration management with design documents updated accurately reflecting as-built conditions.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in design engineering, modifications, or plant engineering at a nuclear facility.
- Experience developing design change packages including calculations, drawings, and specifications.
- Knowledge of 10 CFR 50.59 change processes and licensing basis preservation.
- Understanding of procurement engineering for safety-related components and commercial grade dedication.
- Ability to support field implementation: walkdowns, installation oversight, and testing.
- Configuration management discipline: documents must reflect reality, not intentions.
- Coordination skills spanning engineering, operations, maintenance, and construction.
Nice-to-haves
- Professional Engineer license or progress toward one.
- Experience with 3D modeling and design visualization tools.
- Familiarity with digital modification processes and software configuration control.
- Knowledge of ASME Section III or Section VIII for pressure boundary modifications.
