Nuclear Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Digital I&C platforms, PLC and DCS programming, IEEE 603 and IEEE 7-4.3.2, cyber security for control systems (NEI 08-09), setpoint methodology, loop tuning, control system simulators
About the role
You will engineer the nervous system of the nuclear plant for a utility or I&C vendor, designing the instrumentation and control systems that monitor the reactor and actuate safety functions. The team spans analog legacy systems and modern digital upgrades, ensuring every measurement is accurate and every protective action occurs on demand. You will design modifications, resolve obsolescence, and support digital upgrades through rigorous qualification. This role matters because operators and safety systems depend entirely on what your instruments tell them, and your engineering ensures they can trust every signal. You will also lead the response to cyber security assessments of digital assets, implementing controls without compromising system availability. Your setpoint calculations will be performed with meticulous attention to instrument uncertainties and drift allowances. You will manage the software configuration of digital systems with the discipline the regulator expects, tracking every change. Your troubleshooting will combine first-principles understanding with systematic testing, resolving the intermittent faults that baffle less methodical engineers.
What you will achieve
- Deliver I&C design modifications on schedule with complete design packages passing independent review first time.
- Resolve instrument drift and calibration issues, maintaining measurement accuracy within technical specification limits.
- Support digital I&C upgrades with cybersecurity and software qualification evidence regulators accept.
- Reduce spurious actuations 40 percent through setpoint optimization and signal validation improvements.
- Complete obsolescence replacements for aging components with zero impact on plant operations.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in I&C engineering for nuclear plants, power generation, or process industries.
- Understanding of reactor protection systems, engineered safety feature actuation, and control logic.
- Experience with instrument calibration, setpoint methodology, and loop performance analysis.
- Knowledge of digital I&C qualification requirements including software V&V and cybersecurity.
- Ability to read and develop logic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
- Familiarity with 10 CFR 50.59 evaluations for I&C modifications.
- Troubleshooting discipline: you isolate faults systematically in complex control loops.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with specific digital platforms used in nuclear applications.
- Knowledge of NEI 08-09 cyber security requirements for critical digital assets.
- Familiarity with human factors engineering for control room modifications.
- Experience supporting NRC inspections of I&C programs.
