Nuclear Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. MCNP and SCALE neutronics codes, RELAP5 or TRACE thermal hydraulics, MATLAB and Python, nuclear data libraries (ENDF), 10 CFR 50 fundamentals, CAD for plant layouts, core monitoring systems
About the role
You will work as a well-rounded reactor engineer for a nuclear power utility, supporting analysis, design, and operations across the plant with real safety significance. The team covers everything from core performance to system health, and you will rotate through genuine problems rather than shadow exercises, building the breadth that makes nuclear engineers valuable. You will verify calculations, support licensing submittals, and respond to emergent plant issues with the conservative judgment the industry demands. This role matters because every calculation you verify and every system you support keeps the plant running safely and the grid powered, which makes your engineering judgment part of the public trust. You will also interface directly with NRC resident inspectors during routine inspections, answering technical questions with the precision the role demands. Your analyses will feed the plant's corrective action program, ensuring issues are resolved at their root rather than merely documented. You will participate in industry peer groups and owner group meetings, bringing back operating experience that improves your plant. Your engineering notebooks will be models of clarity, because in nuclear work the record must stand on its own years later.
What you will achieve
- Deliver verified neutronics and thermal-hydraulic analyses that support core reload licensing milestones on schedule, with independent review completed cleanly.
- Resolve system health issues by diagnosing root causes and implementing fixes that survive independent engineering review without rework.
- Support refueling outage planning with complete analysis packages delivered two weeks ahead of need dates.
- Reduce recurring equipment issues 30 percent through systematic trending and preventive engineering actions.
- Write technical evaluations clear enough that operations and licensing teams can act on them directly, reducing review cycle time.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in nuclear engineering, reactor operations support, or a closely related technical role.
- Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of reactor theory: reactivity control, neutronics, and thermal-hydraulic fundamentals.
- Experience with at least one industry analysis code such as MCNP, SCALE, RELAP5, or TRACE.
- Ability to write and independently check engineering calculations to nuclear quality standards.
- Understanding of nuclear safety culture and why conservative decision-making matters more than speed.
- Clear technical writing skills for evaluations, operability determinations, and licensing correspondence.
Nice-to-haves
- Engineer-in-Training certification or progress toward a Professional Engineer license.
- Familiarity with 10 CFR 50 requirements and plant technical specifications.
- Experience supporting refueling outages, plant startups, or power ascension testing.
- SRO license or certification, completed or in progress.
