NOC Technician
The job description
Tech stack. Network monitoring platforms, SNMP and trap management, ticketing and escalation workflows, first-level network troubleshooting (ping, traceroute, SNMP walks, interface stats), shift operations discipline, incident bridging, documentation
About the role
You will watch the network from the network operations center of a managed service provider responsible for thousands of customer circuits and devices. Your screens are the first place problems appear, and your triage decides what gets fixed in minutes versus what becomes a prolonged outage. You will monitor continuously, diagnose first-level network issues directly, dispatch field resources with precise information, bridge incidents with the right participants until resolution, and communicate clearly to customers and management throughout. You will develop pattern recognition for network behavior that lets you spot developing problems before they become outages. Your incident bridges will be known for efficiency: the right people, clear updates, and fast resolution. Your monitoring hygiene work will reduce the noise that causes alert fatigue across the entire operations team.
What you will achieve
- Acknowledge and triage network alarms within SLA on every shift, with accurate severity assessment that routes issues correctly the first time and avoids both under- and over-escalation.
- Resolve first-level network issues directly (link downs, device reachability, interface errors, configuration drift) in the majority of cases without engineering escalation.
- Coordinate incident bridges efficiently: correct participants engaged quickly, clear periodic updates, documented timelines, and clean handoffs between shifts.
- Reduce mean time to dispatch for field issues through precise problem descriptions, relevant diagnostics attached, and correct site and access information that let technicians arrive prepared.
- Maintain monitoring hygiene by identifying stale, duplicate, or misconfigured alerts and driving their correction with the engineering teams.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in a NOC, network operations, or network technical support role.
- Solid TCP/IP fundamentals: addressing and subnetting, routing basics, VLANs, and common protocols (BGP and OSPF awareness).
- Experience with network monitoring platforms, SNMP-based alarming, and trap interpretation.
- Ability to run first-level diagnostics and to interpret interface statistics, error counters, and logs correctly.
- Clear, professional communication under pressure with customers, engineers, and management simultaneously.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Nice-to-haves
- CCNA or CompTIA Network+ certification.
- Experience with ITSM ticketing platforms and SLA-driven workflows.
- Familiarity with fiber and copper physical-layer troubleshooting to isolate layer-1 issues.
- Knowledge of DDoS attack recognition and initial mitigation steps.
