Munitions/Ordnance Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. energetic materials, propellant formulation, CAD (Creo, SolidWorks), hydrocode simulation, insensitive munitions testing, fuze design, hazard classification, test data analysis
About the role
You will join a defense technology company developing the munitions at the heart of its weapon systems, where chemistry, mechanics, and safety intersect in every design decision. The ordnance team works with energetic materials, propellant formulations, and warhead configurations, balancing maximum effect on target against safety through storage, transport, handling, and launch. Your designs must perform violently and precisely at the intended moment while remaining inert through every insult the stockpile-to-target sequence can deliver, and your test data proves both beyond dispute.
What you will achieve
- Formulate or select propellant and explosive fills that meet performance targets while passing insensitive munitions criteria.
- Design warhead configurations using hydrocode simulation, demonstrating fragmentation or penetration performance within 10 percent of test results.
- Deliver fuze integration designs that arm reliably at the intended point and remain safe through the full stockpile-to-target sequence.
- Cut development iteration time by pairing simulation with small-scale testing before committing to full-scale shots.
- Author hazard classification and safety documentation that clears review without major findings.
- Qualify a munition component through the full environmental and safety test sequence with zero major findings at the final safety review.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- You bring 2 to 5 years of experience in munitions, energetics, or ordnance design.
- You understand explosive and propellant chemistry, including sensitivity, stability, and compatibility.
- You have used CAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks for warhead or munition component design.
- You are familiar with insensitive munitions requirements and the standard test battery.
- You grasp fuzing principles and the safety architecture that separates safe from armed states.
- You work rigorously with energetic materials procedures and respect the discipline the field demands.
- You have designed mechanical components for munitions, such as housings or safe-and-arm mechanisms, with attention to tolerance and assembly.
Nice-to-haves
- You have run hydrocode or finite element simulations of warhead function.
- You bring experience with small-scale energetics testing and data reduction.
- You have supported hazard classification testing or safety board reviews.
- You are eligible for a U.S. security clearance.
- You bring experience with additive manufacturing of energetic or structural munition components, including process qualification.
