MEP Electrical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Revit MEP, NEC code mastery, lighting design (AGi32 or Visual), power distribution design, load calculations, SKM or ETAP, LEED and energy code compliance, fire alarm design basics
About the role
You will design building electrical systems at an MEP engineering firm serving healthcare and higher-education clients with demanding reliability requirements. Your designs power hospitals and campuses: normal and emergency distribution that must work during the worst day the building will ever see, lighting that meets both code and human needs, and systems coordinated with every other trade in a crowded ceiling. You will take projects from schematic design through construction administration, answering the contractor's questions until the building is energized and occupied. You will design lighting, power distribution, and life-safety systems for commercial and institutional buildings, coordinating closely with mechanical and plumbing disciplines. Your designs will balance first cost, energy performance, and maintainability across the building's full lifecycle.
What you will achieve
- Deliver complete electrical construction documents for buildings up to 200,000 square feet, with power, lighting, and fire alarm systems fully coordinated in Revit and clash-free against other trades.
- Produce designs that pass plan review with minimal comments through rigorous NEC compliance, clear one-line diagrams, and complete schedules.
- Achieve lighting power densities below energy code baselines while meeting IES illuminance and uniformity targets, supporting LEED certification goals with documented calculations.
- Coordinate designs with mechanical, plumbing, structural, and architectural teams, resolving conflicts in the model during design rather than in the field during construction.
- Support construction administration with prompt submittal reviews and RFI responses, typically within two business days, keeping contractors moving and the schedule intact.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of building electrical design experience in an MEP or consulting engineering setting.
- Strong working knowledge of the NEC, including emergency and standby systems, healthcare facilities, and wiring methods.
- Proficiency with Revit MEP for modeling, circuiting, panel schedules, and construction documentation.
- Ability to perform load calculations, available fault current analysis, and selective coordination studies.
- Experience coordinating with architects, owners, and other engineering disciplines through design phases.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
Nice-to-haves
- PE license or EIT certification with active progress toward licensure.
- Experience with healthcare or laboratory facility design including essential electrical systems.
- Familiarity with lighting controls, daylighting strategies, and Title 24 or ASHRAE 90.1 compliance.
- Knowledge of emergency power systems: generators, transfer switches, and selective coordination.
