Mechatronics Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Integrated electro-mechanical design, motor and drive selection, sensor integration and selection, embedded control basics, SolidWorks, MATLAB/Simulink, rapid prototyping, system bring-up and characterization
About the role
You will build smart electromechanical products at a company developing automated sample handling instruments for diagnostic laboratories where a dropped or misidentified sample is a patient safety event. Your systems blend mechanics, electronics, and control into one: precision stages moving samples with micron repeatability, sensors confirming every position, firmware closing the loops. You will own these integrated subsystems end to end, from mechanism concept through motor and sensor selection, control tuning support, and validation against performance and reliability requirements. You will integrate mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems into cohesive products, owning the interfaces where disciplines meet and problems hide. Your system-level testing will prove the integrated product performs as intended.
What you will achieve
- Deliver integrated mechatronic subsystems (precision motion stages, grippers, liquid dispensers) meeting accuracy, speed, and reliability specifications validated by lifecycle testing.
- Select and integrate motors, encoders, and sensors with control requirements considered from the start, avoiding the expensive rework that comes from designing mechanics and controls in isolation.
- Bring up new subsystems on the bench efficiently, characterizing performance with measurements and tuning alongside controls engineers to hit specifications with margin.
- Design for the realities of volume manufacturing and field service: calibratable assemblies, replaceable wear components, accessible adjustments, and fully testable interfaces.
- Reduce subsystem cost through intelligent integration: fewer parts, shared structural elements, and components chosen for both mechanical fit and electrical compatibility.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing electromechanical systems that combine mechanics, electronics, and control in shipping products.
- Strong mechanical design skills plus working knowledge of motors, sensors, encoders, and drive electronics sufficient to make integration decisions.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and to collaborate productively with firmware and controls engineers on shared problems.
- Experience with precision motion components: linear guides, ball screws, belt drives, and their mounting and alignment.
- Hands-on bring-up and debug of integrated systems, from first motion to validated performance.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with laboratory automation, diagnostic instruments, or other regulated products.
- Familiarity with control theory basics, PID tuning, and motion profiling.
- Background in design for high reliability in environments where failure has serious consequences.
- Knowledge of EMI considerations in mixed electro-mechanical assemblies.
