Mechanical Systems Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. System architecture, requirements decomposition, interface management, integration planning, FMEA, system-level tolerance analysis, MATLAB for system modeling, configuration management
About the role
You will own the mechanical system at a company developing automated guided vehicles for manufacturing logistics that must navigate dynamic factory floors safely. Your scope is the whole machine: how the chassis, drive system, lift mechanism, and payload handling fit together into a vehicle that runs three shifts without fail. You will define what each subsystem must deliver, manage the interfaces where subsystems meet, resolve conflicts over space, mass, and power with analysis, and lead integration when hardware from four teams becomes one vehicle. You will own mechanical system architecture, defining interfaces between subsystems and ensuring the integrated system meets its requirements. Your systems thinking will catch the integration issues that component-level design misses.
What you will achieve
- Own the mechanical system architecture including the mass budget, space allocation, power budget, and interface definitions, all documented so every subsystem team builds against the same truth.
- Decompose vehicle-level requirements into quantitative, testable subsystem requirements with acceptance criteria, catching integration risks on paper before hardware exists and money is spent.
- Lead mechanical integration across teams, driving cross-functional issue resolution with structured methods so the first full vehicle build comes together with minimal rework and no interface surprises.
- Deliver system-level validation: durability testing, environmental testing, and performance testing that proves the vehicle meets its specification with documented margins.
- Maintain the system risk register as a living document and drive mitigation actions to closure, keeping program-level mechanical risk visible, quantified, and managed.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years working on multi-subsystem mechanical products that shipped as integrated systems.
- Ability to write clear requirements and interface control documents that eliminate ambiguity between teams.
- Breadth across structures, mechanisms, thermal management, and manufacturing fundamentals sufficient to judge subsystem designs.
- Structured integration skills: build sequencing, issue tracking, and root-cause debug on complex assemblies.
- Familiarity with FMEA, fault trees, or similar risk analysis methods applied to real programs.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with mobile platforms, electric vehicles, or autonomous robotics.
- Knowledge of functional safety standards or machinery directive compliance for mobile equipment.
- Proficiency with system modeling in MATLAB, Simulink, or similar tools for trade studies.
- Familiarity with configuration management for complex multi-team hardware programs.
