Mechanical Project Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Project planning and scheduling, cross-functional coordination, supplier management, risk tracking and mitigation, budget management, technical documentation, stage-gate development processes
About the role
You will run mechanical workstreams on new product programs at a company developing commercial HVAC equipment where product cycles are long and launch quality determines brand reputation for a decade. You will own the mechanical scope from concept through production launch: coordinating designers and analysts, managing suppliers for prototypes and production tooling, tracking budget and schedule honestly, and driving the program through design reviews and validation gates. Programs succeed when you keep the technical work, the timeline, and the cross-functional team aligned through every phase. You will own mechanical scope on capital projects from estimate through commissioning, coordinating contractors and managing schedule and budget. You will review submittals critically and resolve field issues decisively to keep projects on track. Your documentation will give operations everything they need to run and maintain the installed systems.
What you will achieve
- Deliver mechanical scopes for new product programs on schedule and within budget, coordinating internal engineers and external suppliers with clear accountability and weekly progress tracking.
- Drive programs through stage gates with complete, quality deliverables: designs released on time, analyses complete, test plans approved, and risks retired before each gate.
- Manage prototype and tooling suppliers to quality, cost, and delivery targets, resolving issues at the supplier before they impact the program schedule.
- Maintain clear program communication: status, risks, decisions, and action items visible to all stakeholders every week without surprises.
- Close validation campaigns on time by planning test resources and lab capacity early and tracking every test to its requirement through completion.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience on mechanical scopes of product development programs with real launch accountability.
- Solid mechanical engineering fundamentals sufficient to judge design quality, analysis completeness, and technical risk.
- Experience coordinating across functions: design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and service.
- Ability to build and maintain project schedules with realistic dependencies, buffers, and critical path awareness.
- Strong communication and documentation discipline across distributed teams.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- PMP certification or formal project management training with applied practice.
- Experience with HVAC, appliances, or other long-lifecycle product development.
- Familiarity with PLM-driven development processes and engineering change management.
- Knowledge of regulatory and certification requirements (UL, AHRI) for HVAC products.
