Mechanical Design Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Creo or SolidWorks (advanced), ASME Y14.5 GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, DFM for molding/machining/sheet metal, PDM/PLM systems, design verification planning, material selection
About the role
You will own detailed mechanical design at a company manufacturing analytical laboratory instruments where precision and repeatability are the product customers pay for. Your drawings are the binding contract with manufacturing: every tolerance, surface finish, datum, and note must be intentional and correct. You will take system concepts and turn them into fully defined, buildable, serviceable hardware, then prove through verification that the hardware meets every requirement it was designed against. You will create production-ready designs from concept sketches through detailed drawings, applying DFM principles that keep manufacturing costs down and quality up. Your GD&T will communicate design intent clearly so machinists and suppliers build exactly what you intended. You will iterate quickly through prototypes, learning from each build and converging on designs that are robust, serviceable, and cost-effective.
What you will achieve
- Deliver fully detailed design packages (3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs) for precision instrument subsystems, released through PLM with complete change control and revision history.
- Achieve assembly yields above 98 percent through rigorous tolerance analysis and datum strategies proven by analysis before production, not discovered during it.
- Reduce drawing-related manufacturing questions, deviations, and nonconformances by producing documentation that machinists and inspectors describe as clear and complete.
- Drive DFM improvements with suppliers that cut part cost while holding critical tolerances, documented with before-and-after cost and quality data.
- Own design verification for your subsystems: test plans with acceptance criteria, disciplined execution, and reports that prove requirements are met with margin.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of detailed mechanical design with production drawing release responsibility and real accountability for quality.
- Advanced CAD proficiency and genuine expertise in GD&T per ASME Y14.5, applied to inspection as well as design.
- Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis on multi-part assemblies, including statistical methods where appropriate.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and designing to their real capabilities: CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, and finishing.
- Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems, engineering change processes, and revision control discipline.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with precision instruments, optical assemblies, or motion stages.
- Familiarity with cleanroom-compatible materials, finishes, and assembly practices.
- Background in design for serviceability: field-replaceable modules and clear service documentation.
- Knowledge of material selection for chemical compatibility in laboratory environments.
