Lead Energy Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. ETAP, PVsyst, PSS/E, MS Project or Primavera, Python, AutoCAD, design review and QA systems
About the role
You will lead a small team of energy engineers delivering the design and analysis for an active project portfolio at a growing energy company. You own both the technical output and the people: project assignments, review quality, schedules, and the professional growth of your engineers. This role matters because the team ships what you enable, and your leadership determines whether projects hit their milestones with designs that are right the first time. As a lead, you will balance hands-on engineering with team leadership, typically carrying your own project load while guiding two to four engineers on theirs. The role includes project scoping and fee estimation, resource planning across competing deadlines, and difficult conversations when quality or schedule slips. Your technical reviews are the last line of defense before deliverables reach clients, so your redlines set the standard. You will also run the team's weekly project reviews, keeping work visible and blockers surfaced early.
What you will achieve
- Deliver the full engineering scope for 150+ MW of projects per year on schedule and within engineering budget, with design-caused construction rework under 2 percent
- Build a team of 4 to 6 engineers with clear roles, growth plans, and a review culture that catches errors before clients or authorities do, with estimates tracked against actuals to sharpen future scoping
- Cut proposal-to-kickoff time by 25 percent through standardized scoping, staffing plans, and reusable proposal content
- Own resource planning and priority calls across competing project deadlines without burning out the team, escalating resourcing conflicts before they threaten delivery dates
- Drive continuous improvement: post-project reviews that convert lessons learned into updated standards and templates
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 7 to 10+ years of energy engineering experience with a record of delivering complex projects end to end
- Demonstrated technical leadership: leading design teams, running reviews, and owning multi-discipline coordination
- Strong project management instincts: scoping, scheduling, budgeting engineering hours, and managing client expectations
- Deep expertise in at least one energy domain with working fluency across the others your team covers
- Ability to hire, mentor, and performance-manage engineers, including difficult feedback conversations
- Calm prioritization under competing deadlines and shifting project scopes
- Excellent client communication: status reporting, scope negotiation, and technical presentations
Nice-to-haves
- PE license
- PMP certification or formal project management training
- Experience scaling an engineering team through rapid company growth
- Background in both consulting and owner/developer environments
- Experience with project management tools and engineering resource planning
