Junior Mechanical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. SolidWorks, basic GD&T, hand calculations, 3D printing, machine shop basics, Excel for engineering calculations, drawing standards, PDM fundamentals
About the role
You will join the mechanical team at a company that builds material handling equipment for distribution centers operating at relentless pace. This is a growth role with genuine responsibility: you will take on real parts and real drawings from your first month while senior engineers review your work closely and teach you professional practice. You will learn how designs survive manufacturing variation, how tolerances actually behave on a shop floor, and how to turn a rough concept into hardware that ships and works for years. You will build fundamental skills fast through structured mentorship, owning well-defined design and analysis tasks while learning the team's standards. Your growth will be measured in the increasing complexity of work you can handle independently. Ask questions relentlessly, document what you learn, and treat every design review as a masterclass.
What you will achieve
- Release your first production parts within two quarters, progressing from simple brackets and guards to functional subassemblies under senior guidance, with review rework decreasing each cycle.
- Produce clean 2D drawings with correct GD&T that machinists and fabricators can build from accurately without follow-up questions or assumptions.
- Complete a structured learning plan covering statics review, tolerance stack-ups, and DFM basics within your first year, applying each skill to real parts you own.
- Support prototype builds and testing in the shop, documenting results with photos and measurements that feed directly back into design improvements.
- Contribute to the team's standard parts library and design templates, making future work faster and more consistent for everyone.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 0 to 2 years of experience, including internships, co-ops, or strong academic and personal projects with real fabricated parts.
- Solid mechanics fundamentals from coursework: statics, mechanics of materials, and basic dynamics.
- Working CAD ability and the ability to read engineering drawings including weld and assembly drawings.
- Hands-on inclination: you have built things, enjoy the shop, and learn fastest by doing.
- Coachability, curiosity, and clear communication about your work, including surfacing confusion early.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Nice-to-haves
- Formula SAE, Baja, robotics team, or similar hands-on competition experience.
- Basic FEA exposure from coursework or personal projects.
- Familiarity with machine shop equipment: mills, lathes, and welding basics.
- Experience with 3D printing for functional prototypes.
