Junior Energy Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. AutoCAD, Excel energy models, PVsyst (basics), Python (basics), data loggers, utility bill analysis templates
About the role
You will join an energy engineering team as a junior engineer, learning the craft on real projects from your first month. You will support senior engineers on feasibility studies, design packages, and data analysis while building toward independent ownership of project scopes. This role matters because every senior engineer on the team started where you are, and the team's future capacity depends on juniors who ask sharp questions, document carefully, and grow fast with mentorship. You will learn the craft through structured mentorship, starting with well-defined analysis tasks and growing toward owning project deliverables as your judgment develops. The role includes dedicated training time on the team's core software and study methods, plus regular design review sessions where senior engineers walk through their thinking. Curiosity and rigor matter more than existing expertise, and your fresh perspective on old templates is genuinely welcome. You will also rotate across project types early on, building breadth before you specialize.
What you will achieve
- Support 8 to 12 project analyses per year: data gathering, spreadsheet modeling, and drawing markups that senior engineers review and approve
- Build a personal library of calculation templates and checklists that cut your task turnaround time in half within the first year, with your calculations independently checked as part of the QA process
- Deliver site survey reports with complete photo documentation, measurements, and equipment inventories that designers can work from directly
- Own utility bill analysis and load profile characterization for commercial customers, identifying savings opportunities for senior review, building a personal reference library of solved examples as you go
- Grow into independent ownership of small project scopes (single-site assessments, permit drawing sets) by month 12 with decreasing review cycles
What you will bring
Must-haves
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or energy engineering (0 to 2 years of professional experience)
- Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, heat transfer, or power systems from coursework and internships
- Proficiency with Excel for engineering calculations and data analysis
- Basic AutoCAD ability: reading drawings confidently, producing simple markups and layouts
- Genuine curiosity about energy systems, shown through projects, internships, or self-directed learning
- Careful documentation habits and responsiveness to review feedback
- Clear written and verbal communication for a collaborative team environment
Nice-to-haves
- Internship or co-op experience with an energy company, utility, or engineering firm
- EIT certification or intent to pursue it in the first year
- Familiarity with PVsyst, eQUEST, or similar modeling tools from coursework
- Python or other scripting exposure for data analysis
- EIT certification or active pursuit of one
