The job description
Tech stack. C, Zephyr/nRF Connect SDK, BLE, Wi-Fi, MQTT/CoAP, low-power design, OTA updates, cloud device twins (AWS IoT/Azure IoT)
About the role
You will join an IoT company building battery-powered sensing devices deployed in the tens of thousands across commercial buildings. The firmware team owns the device side of a cloud-connected system: sensing, wireless, power management, and fleet updates. This role matters because these devices must run for years on a coin cell while staying reliably connected, and that combination is one of the hardest problems in embedded engineering.
What you will achieve
- Ship firmware for a new multi-sensor node that achieves 3+ years of battery life on a CR2450 while reporting data every 15 minutes, verified by accelerated life testing, with test results reviewed and signed off by hardware engineering
- Drive BLE and Wi-Fi coexistence reliability, holding connection success rates above 99% in congested 2.4 GHz environments as measured in the RF chamber and field pilots
- Reduce fleet-wide firmware update time by building a delta OTA mechanism that cuts average payload size by 60% and resumes cleanly after interrupted downloads
- Build the device-to-cloud data pipeline integration (MQTT topics, shadow state, provisioning), eliminating every manual device onboarding step from the factory flow, and cutting factory provisioning time per unit by half
- Own power-state validation with automated current profiling in CI, catching power regressions before they reach the field and keeping every release inside the energy budget
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2-5 years developing firmware for connected low-power devices on platforms such as Nordic, Silicon Labs, or Espressif
- Strong C with low-power design instincts: sleep states, peripheral duty cycling, and wake-source management validated by measurement
- Hands-on BLE stack experience including GATT services, advertising, and bonding, plus at least one shipped Wi-Fi product
- Familiarity with MQTT or CoAP and the realities of unreliable networks: retries, backoff strategies, and offline buffering
- Experience with secure provisioning and OTA update flows on constrained devices, including interrupted-update recovery
- Working knowledge of a cloud IoT platform's device side such as AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT Hub
- Debugging skills across the wireless boundary: packet sniffers, RSSI analysis, and coexistence troubleshooting
Nice-to-haves
- Thread, Zigbee, or LoRaWAN experience from shipped or piloted products
- Matter/Thread certification exposure, including the test harness and certification process
- Experience with energy harvesting or solar-powered device design
