HVAC Mechanical Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Load calculations (Manual J, ASHRAE methods), psychrometrics, Revit MEP, duct and piping design, equipment selection, energy modeling basics, ASHRAE 90.1, building and mechanical codes
About the role
You will design heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems at an MEP firm serving commercial office and mixed-use developments in demanding climates. Comfort, indoor air quality, and energy performance all flow from your calculations, equipment selections, and layouts. You will take buildings from schematic design through construction administration: sizing equipment honestly, routing systems through real structures crowded with other trades, and answering the contractor's questions until the air flows exactly as designed and the building commissions cleanly. You will design heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for commercial and industrial buildings, performing load calculations and selecting equipment that delivers comfort efficiently. Your designs will meet energy codes and sustainability targets while keeping first costs reasonable. You will coordinate with architects and other disciplines to route ductwork and piping through real buildings with real constraints.
What you will achieve
- Deliver complete HVAC designs for commercial buildings up to 150,000 square feet, with documented load calculations, justified equipment selections, and fully coordinated Revit models.
- Beat energy code baselines by 10 percent or more through efficient system selection, controls strategies, and envelope coordination, documented in compliance models submitted with permit sets.
- Produce designs that pass plan review cleanly through rigorous code compliance, complete schedules, and clear details that answer reviewers' questions before they ask.
- Resolve field coordination issues during construction with practical solutions that protect system performance instead of compromising it for convenience.
- Support commissioning with functional test procedures and trend reviews that verify systems perform as designed before owner turnover.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of HVAC design experience in commercial, institutional, or mixed-use buildings.
- Strong grasp of load calculation methods, psychrometrics, and air and water distribution fundamentals.
- Proficiency with Revit MEP for HVAC modeling, documentation, and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Knowledge of ASHRAE 90.1, the International Mechanical Code, and relevant energy codes.
- Ability to select and schedule equipment: air handlers, chillers, boilers, VRF systems, and dedicated outdoor air systems.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
Nice-to-haves
- PE license or EIT certification with active progress toward licensure.
- Experience with energy modeling software such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus, or IES VE.
- LEED AP credential or demonstrated high-performance building experience.
- Familiarity with laboratory or healthcare HVAC requirements.
