High Voltage Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. High-voltage insulation design, partial discharge testing, creepage and clearance analysis, HV test equipment, EMTP or similar transient simulation, safety interlock design, IEC and IEEE HV standards, corona analysis
About the role
You will engineer high-voltage systems at a company building medium-voltage power conversion equipment for grid and industrial applications. Insulation coordination, partial discharge control, and personnel safety are the disciplines that separate working HV products from dangerous ones, and your designs must satisfy all three simultaneously. You will design HV assemblies, specify insulation systems, validate them with high-potential and impulse testing, and make sure every product is safe to build in the factory, install in the field, and service for decades. You will design insulation systems and clearances that withstand switching surges, lightning impulses, and contamination with margins proven by type testing. Your designs protect both the grid and the people who operate and maintain it.
What you will achieve
- Design HV assemblies meeting creepage, clearance, and insulation coordination requirements per IEC standards, validated by partial discharge testing showing inception voltages safely above operating levels with margin.
- Deliver type-test programs (dielectric withstand, impulse, thermal cycling) that qualify products for their voltage class on the first attempt, with complete test documentation.
- Reduce insulation-related field issues to zero through disciplined material selection, electric field grading design, and manufacturing process controls verified by routine testing.
- Build safety into every design: interlocks, grounding provisions, discharge devices, and service procedures, each reviewed for arc-flash and shock hazards with documented risk assessments.
- Develop in-house HV test capability, including safe procedures, calibrated fixtures, and trained operators that make high-potential testing routine and repeatable.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years working with high-voltage equipment, insulation systems, or HV test laboratories.
- Understanding of insulation coordination: creepage, clearance, pollution degree, overvoltage categories, and material comparative tracking index.
- Experience with HV testing methods: AC/DC hipot, partial discharge measurement, and impulse testing with proper safety practice.
- Knowledge of relevant standards such as IEC 60664, IEC 60071, or the IEEE C37 series.
- Rigorous safety mindset for HV work, including lockout-tagout, test area controls, and grounding procedures.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with medium-voltage converters, switchgear, or power transformers.
- Familiarity with transient simulation tools for switching surges and lightning impulse studies.
- Background in corona suppression and electric field grading design for HV assemblies.
- Knowledge of SF6 alternatives and environmental considerations in HV design.
