Hardware Test Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Test plan development, automated test equipment, Python test scripting, environmental chambers, HALT/HASS, boundary scan, ICT and functional test, data analysis, failure analysis
About the role
You will own hardware validation at a product company where testing is what stands between the design team and an expensive field failure. Hardware test engineers design the test strategies, build the automation, and run the environmental and electrical stress that proves products are genuinely ready. You will find the weaknesses nobody else looked for, document them with precision, and drive them to resolution before customers ever see them. Good test engineers are the conscience of the hardware team: skeptical, thorough, and unwilling to sign off on hope. Your work directly determines warranty costs and brand reputation.
What you will achieve
- Develop comprehensive validation test plans covering electrical, environmental, mechanical, and EMC requirements with full traceability to product specifications
- Build automated test systems using Python-driven instruments, switching matrices, and data logging that run regression suites unattended overnight
- Execute environmental qualification including temperature cycling, humidity, vibration, and shock testing per industry standards with clear pass criteria
- Drive failure analysis on test escapes and field returns, delivering root-cause reports with corrective actions that genuinely prevent recurrence
- Reduce test time per unit through fixture optimization and parallelization while maintaining or improving defect detection coverage
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in hardware testing, validation, or test engineering with substantial hands-on lab experience
- Experience writing test plans from product requirements with clear pass/fail criteria and requirements traceability
- Proficiency in Python or similar languages for instrument control, test automation, and statistical results analysis
- Familiarity with environmental test standards and equipment: thermal chambers, vibration tables, and ESD guns
- Understanding of common failure modes in electronic assemblies: solder joint fatigue, component derating violations, and connector wear
- Methodical documentation habits producing test reports with setup photos, raw data, analysis, and unambiguous conclusions
- BS in Electrical Engineering or related field
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with HALT/HASS methodologies for accelerated life testing and production screening programs
- Knowledge of boundary scan (JTAG) test development and ICT fixture design requirements
- Familiarity with RF test equipment and wireless certification testing including FCC Part 15 and CE RED
- Experience integrating automated test systems with manufacturing execution systems (MES)
