Grid Integration Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, ETAP, Python, ASPEN OneLiner, interconnection study templates, NERC/FERC regulatory references
About the role
You will join a power generation company connecting new wind, solar, and storage plants to the bulk transmission system. The grid integration team owns every study and submittal between project conception and permission to energize. This role matters because interconnection queues are measured in years, study assumptions decide project viability, and a well-engineered application with clean power flow and stability results is what gets steel in the ground on schedule. You will be the company's translator between project engineering and grid operators, turning interconnection study results into design changes the project team can actually build. The role covers the full study sequence from feasibility through facilities study, plus post-COD compliance such as NERC registration and ongoing model validation. You will track FERC orders and ISO queue reforms that reshape timelines and costs, keeping development strategy ahead of regulatory shifts. When a project lands in a congested cluster study, your mitigation analysis will decide whether it proceeds, gets downsized, or waits for the next cycle.
What you will achieve
- Deliver interconnection applications and system impact study packages for 300+ MW of new generation per year with first-pass completeness above 95 percent
- Cut study iteration cycles by 30 percent by building standardized PSS/E and PSCAD models, reusable dynamic data libraries, and QA scripts, maintaining a study tracker that flags at-risk milestones before they become critical path
- Own power flow, short-circuit, and transient stability analyses that demonstrate compliance with ISO/RTO planning criteria and NERC reliability standards
- Drive network upgrade negotiations by producing defensible cost estimates and alternative mitigation designs that reduce assigned upgrade costs, documented in interconnection playbooks tailored to each utility territory
- Ship commissioning test plans and model validation reports that satisfy utility witness testing and MOD-025 through MOD-027 verification requirements
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in transmission planning, interconnection studies, or generator modeling roles
- Strong command of power flow, contingency analysis, short-circuit, and transient stability fundamentals
- Proficiency with PSS/E or PSLF for steady-state and dynamic simulation of inverter-based resources
- Understanding of interconnection processes in at least one major ISO/RTO market and FERC Order 2023 reforms
- Knowledge of NERC reliability standards relevant to generator owners and operators
- Ability to build and validate dynamic models of wind, solar, and battery plants per WECC and NERC guidelines
- Technical writing strong enough for study reports that regulators and transmission owners accept without rework
Nice-to-haves
- PSCAD/EMT modeling experience for weak-grid and IBR stability studies
- Familiarity with electromagnetic transient phenomena such as sub-synchronous control interaction
- Experience with GADS reporting or generator availability data systems
- EIT certification or progress toward a PE license
- Experience with PSCAD, PSS/E, or PSLF for grid impact studies
