Geothermal Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. TOUGH2, Leapfrog Geothermal, WellCAD, Python, reservoir engineering spreadsheets, drilling engineering references, GIS
About the role
You will join a geothermal energy company developing power and direct-use projects from resource confirmation through plant operation. The team owns the subsurface-to-surface chain: exploration, drilling, reservoir engineering, and plant design. This role matters because geothermal success is won underground before a single turbine spins, and your reservoir models and well designs determine whether a resource delivers decades of baseload power or becomes an expensive lesson. You will work at the intersection of geoscience and power engineering, translating subsurface resource data into plant designs that lenders will finance. The role covers resource confirmation drilling programs, wellfield layout, and the reservoir modeling that underpins 30-year production forecasts. You will evaluate enhanced geothermal systems and advanced closed-loop concepts as the technology frontier expands beyond conventional hydrothermal resources. Well test interpretation will be a core skill, since flow and interference test data reveal what the reservoir can actually sustain.
What you will achieve
- Deliver reservoir models and resource assessments supporting 100+ MW of geothermal development with production forecasts validated against well test data
- Optimize well field designs that maximize steam delivery while managing pressure drawdown and thermal breakthrough over 30-year plant life, with well productivity assumptions tied to test data rather than analogy alone
- Cut drilling non-productive time by 20 percent through improved well planning, lost-circulation mitigation, and real-time drilling data analysis
- Own well test design and interpretation: injection, interference, and long-term flow tests translated into bankable capacity estimates, benchmarked against operating analog plants for credibility with financiers
- Drive plant cycle selection (flash, binary, EGS) with techno-economic models matched to resource temperature and chemistry
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in geothermal, oil and gas, or related subsurface engineering roles
- Strong understanding of reservoir engineering: pressure transient analysis, heat transfer, and multiphase flow in porous media
- Proficiency with geothermal modeling tools such as TOUGH2 or equivalent reservoir simulators
- Working knowledge of drilling engineering: casing design, cementing, directional planning, and high-temperature tool limits
- Ability to interpret well logs, geochemistry, and geophysical surveys for resource characterization
- Familiarity with geothermal power plant cycles and their interface with the steam field
- Clear technical reporting for resource reports that support financing and permitting
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) stimulation and reservoir creation
- Knowledge of scaling and corrosion chemistry in geothermal brines
- Exposure to direct-use or district heating geothermal applications
- Understanding of mineral extraction (lithium) from geothermal brines
- Familiarity with geothermal reservoir modeling tools such as TOUGH2
