Functional Safety Engineer (ISO 26262)
The job description
Tech stack. ISO 26262 work products, FTA/FMEA tools (IQ-FMEA, APIS), requirements management (DOORS, Jama), HARA templates, fault injection test tools
About the role
You will join the functional safety team of an automaker ensuring that electrical and electronic systems cannot cause unreasonable risk from malfunction. The team owns safety analyses, safety cases, and assessment readiness across vehicle programs. This role matters because functional safety is both a legal obligation and a moral one: your hazard analyses and safety goals are what stand between a random hardware fault and a catastrophic outcome, and assessors, regulators, and courts will read your work. You will decompose vehicle-level safety goals into technical safety requirements allocated across hardware and software, maintaining traceability that survives audits. Your FMEDA and dependent-failure analyses will quantify diagnostic coverage and drive hardware architectural metrics to their ASIL targets. You will also coach development teams on work-product expectations, because functional safety only works when every engineer understands which of their artifacts the assessor will actually read.
What you will achieve
- Deliver complete ISO 26262 work products (HARA, functional and technical safety concepts, safety analyses) for systems through ASIL D on program timing
- Cut assessment findings by 50 percent through work product quality: complete traceability from safety goals to verification evidence
- Own FTA, FMEA, and dependent failure analyses with quantitative hardware metrics (SPFM, LFM, PMHF) meeting ASIL targets
- Drive safety culture in development teams: training engineers to write safety requirements that are verifiable, not aspirational
- Ship assessment-ready safety cases that pass independent confirmation reviews without major nonconformities
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in functional safety engineering for automotive E/E systems
- Deep working knowledge of ISO 26262: all parts relevant to system, hardware, and software development
- Proficiency with safety analysis methods: HARA, FTA, FMEA/FMEDA, and common cause and cascading failure analysis
- Experience with requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama, or Codebeamer) and bidirectional traceability
- Understanding of automotive E/E architectures and failure modes of sensors, controllers, and actuators
- Ability to calculate and argue hardware architectural metrics against ASIL targets
- Clear, audit-proof technical writing: your documents must convince skeptical assessors
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with SOTIF (ISO 21448) for ADAS and autonomy systems
- Knowledge of ISO 21434 cybersecurity engineering and its interface with safety
- Familiarity with UL 4600 or other autonomy safety standards
- Functional safety certification (e.g., TÜV Functional Safety Engineer)
