Firmware Test Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Hardware-in-the-loop test architecture, firmware CI/CD pipelines, pytest-based frameworks, fault injection methodologies, custom test fixtures, code coverage analysis, programmable instruments (SCPI/VISA), flaky-test triage
About the role
You will own firmware quality at a device company where validating on real physical hardware is the non-negotiable standard. Firmware test engineers build the complete automation proving firmware works correctly: HIL test rigs, continuous integration pipelines, fault-injection suites, and test frameworks executing against every single commit. You will hunt the defects that only manifest when code meets actual silicon: subtle timing races, power-glitch sensitivities, and intermittent failures that manual testing approaches never catch. Your infrastructure determines whether the team releases with genuine confidence or mere hope, and every firmware engineer depends on your systems daily.
What you will achieve
- Build comprehensive hardware-in-the-loop test rigs with automated pass/fail criteria covering firmware features thoroughly from driver level through system behavior
- Integrate firmware testing deeply into CI pipelines so every commit is validated automatically on real hardware before it can merge
- Develop adversarial fault-injection test suites: power loss during flash writes, bus error injection, sensor failure simulation, and clock glitch handling, all verified graceful
- Reduce test suite flakiness systematically through careful fixture design, precise timing control, test isolation discipline, and data-driven retry analysis
- Drive defect resolution with exemplary bug reports: complete logs, oscilloscope captures, register dumps, and exact failing conditions documented so developers can act immediately
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in firmware testing, embedded test automation, or embedded development roles with a strong quality focus
- Hands-on experience designing hardware-in-the-loop test setups: custom fixtures, programmable power supplies, relay matrices, and electronic load control
- Proficiency in Python for test framework architecture, instrument control via SCPI/VISA protocols, and statistical results analysis
- Solid understanding of firmware fundamentals sufficient to design genuinely adversarial tests that uncover real defects rather than checking boxes
- Familiarity with CI systems such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI, adapted specifically for embedded targets and shared HIL hardware pools
- Methodical, evidence-driven bug reporting: clear reproduction procedures, captured evidence, environment details, and accurate severity assessment
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with coverage-guided testing workflows using gcov or llvm-cov on resource-constrained embedded targets
- Familiarity with mutation testing or property-based testing techniques applied to firmware validation
- Knowledge of manufacturing test development and production test station integration
- Experience with RF or wireless test automation: chamber control software and cellular or WiFi signaling testers
