eVTOL Embedded Software Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. C, C++, real-time operating systems, DO-178C, MISRA C, bare-metal firmware, hardware-in-the-loop testing, CAN and ARINC drivers
About the role
You will join an eVTOL aircraft company to write the embedded software that runs the aircraft's flight-critical functions. This team builds the code behind motor controllers, battery management, sensor interfaces, and actuation, software that must be deterministic, testable, and certifiable to the highest design assurance levels. Your code will fly, the certification authority will read it, and there is no patching an aircraft in service the way you patch a phone app. You will work alongside systems engineers on requirements, hardware engineers on interfaces, and verification engineers on test, and your code will carry the highest design assurance level the program assigns.
What you will achieve
- Deliver DO-178C compliant embedded software for flight-critical functions, passing verification reviews with minimal rework and clean traceability.
- Build deterministic real-time behavior on bare-metal and RTOS targets, proving worst-case execution timing by measurement and analysis.
- Develop hardware-in-the-loop test setups that exercise your software against simulated sensors and actuators before aircraft integration.
- Drive defect rates down through disciplined practices: static analysis, rigorous code reviews, and requirements-based testing with full structural coverage.
- Produce the software verification artifacts, from test cases to traceability data, that the certification team submits as compliance evidence. Coverage analysis leaves no requirement unverified and no code untested at the required structural coverage level.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years writing embedded C or C++ for safety-critical or real-time systems with code that shipped in products.
- Experience with real-time operating systems and bare-metal development on microcontrollers, including interrupt and DMA handling.
- Working knowledge of DO-178C objectives and how they shape software development, verification, and configuration management.
- Familiarity with MISRA C or equivalent coding standards for critical software, applied in practice rather than in theory.
- Experience debugging at the hardware level: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG are everyday tools for you.
- Understanding of communication protocols used in avionics, such as CAN, ARINC 429, SPI, or I2C.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with model-based software development and autocode generation workflows.
- Background in motor control firmware or battery management software specifically.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity considerations for avionics software.
- Familiarity with software configuration management and problem reporting for certification.
