eVTOL Avionics Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. integrated modular avionics, ARINC 429, ARINC 664, CAN bus, GPS/INS integration, air data systems, DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160
About the role
You will join an eVTOL aircraft company to integrate the avionics suite that gives the aircraft its eyes, ears, and nervous system. This team selects and integrates flight displays, navigation sensors, air data systems, and the data buses that tie them to flight controls and propulsion. Your work determines whether sensor data arrives on time, survives interference, and stays trustworthy when the aircraft needs it most, from first power-on through certification flight test. You will be the bridge between avionics suppliers, the software team, and the flight test crew, and your bench rigs will catch the integration problems that schedules fear most.
What you will achieve
- Integrate the avionics sensor suite, from GPS/INS and air data to magnetometers, delivering time-synchronized data the flight controls team can trust for control law execution.
- Architect the avionics data bus topology across ARINC and CAN networks, proving latency and determinism budgets under worst-case loading with analysis and test.
- Drive DO-160 environmental qualification for avionics line-replaceable units, closing vibration, EMI, and thermal findings before installation on the aircraft.
- Build the avionics ground test procedures that catch wiring, configuration, and software load errors before first power-on of the complete aircraft.
- Cut avionics integration debug time by building bench rigs that replicate the aircraft network, letting software and hardware teams test independently and in parallel. Automated checkout scripts on those rigs flag wiring and configuration errors in minutes instead of days.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years integrating avionics systems on aircraft, rotorcraft, or advanced UAVs with installed hardware you debugged.
- Working knowledge of avionics data protocols, including ARINC 429, ARINC 664, and CAN bus, and how they behave under fault conditions.
- Experience selecting and integrating navigation sensors such as GPS/INS units, air data computers, and attitude and heading sensors.
- Familiarity with DO-178C and DO-254 as they apply to avionics hardware and software assurance levels.
- Ability to read schematics, review harness designs, and troubleshoot avionics faults to root cause on the bench and on the aircraft.
- Experience with DO-160 qualification testing or equivalent environmental test programs for airborne equipment.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with integrated modular avionics platforms and partitioned architectures.
- Background in EMI/EMC troubleshooting on aircraft installations.
- Knowledge of ADS-B, transponder, and communications radio integration.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity considerations for connected avionics systems.
