Energy Efficiency Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. eQUEST, EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, RETScreen, Trane TRACE, data loggers and power meters, IPMVP protocols, Excel financial models
About the role
You will join an energy services company that identifies and implements efficiency projects in commercial buildings, hospitals, campuses, and industrial plants. The team owns energy audits, savings calculations, and measurement and verification from walkthrough to guaranteed performance. This role matters because efficiency is the cheapest megawatt, and your audits convert wasted energy into funded projects with paybacks that CFOs approve. You will split time between field audits and desk analysis, since the best energy conservation measures are found walking mechanical rooms, not just reading utility bills. The role covers ASHRAE Level 1 through 3 audits, retro-commissioning investigations, and measurement and verification plans that prove savings actually materialized. You will navigate utility rebate and incentive programs, structuring projects so customers capture every available dollar. Your audit reports need to sell the project internally too, translating kWh and therms into payback periods and NPV that CFOs approve.
What you will achieve
- Deliver ASHRAE Level 2 and Level 3 energy audits identifying 15 to 25 percent site energy savings across 1M+ square feet of facilities per year
- Build investment-grade savings calculations with uncertainty bands tight enough to support energy savings performance contracts, ranked by simple payback and lifecycle cost so clients can sequence implementation
- Own whole-building energy models in eQUEST or EnergyPlus calibrated to utility bills within 5 percent on a monthly basis
- Drive project implementation that realizes 95 percent or more of guaranteed savings through rigorous commissioning and M&V, with pre and post retrofit metering specified to IPMVP standards
- Cut audit-to-proposal cycle time by 25 percent with standardized templates, measure libraries, and automated reporting
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience in energy auditing, building systems engineering, or energy services
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls sequences, lighting, building envelope, and industrial process loads
- Proficiency with at least one building energy modeling tool such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus, or OpenStudio
- Working knowledge of IPMVP Options A through D and when each applies
- Ability to use data loggers, power meters, and trend data to diagnose real building performance
- Familiarity with ASHRAE audit levels, Guideline 14, and Standard 90.1
- Financial modeling skills for simple payback, NPV, and life-cycle cost analysis of efficiency measures
Nice-to-haves
- CEM (Certified Energy Manager) or CEA credential
- Experience with performance contracting or utility rebate program delivery
- Knowledge of building automation systems (BACnet, Niagara, or similar)
- PE license or EIT certification
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential or equivalent
