Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. DERMS/VPP platforms, IEEE 1547 test procedures, OpenADR, Python, hosting capacity tools (CYME, Synergi), AMI data analytics
About the role
You will join a distributed energy company orchestrating fleets of rooftop solar, batteries, EVs, and smart thermostats into virtual power plants. The engineering team owns device integration, dispatch algorithms, and grid services delivery across thousands of customer sites. This role matters because the aggregated fleet is only as reliable as your engineering, and utilities and grid operators are buying firm capacity from resources you make dispatchable. You will engineer the aggregation layer where rooftop solar, batteries, EVs, and flexible loads become a dispatchable virtual power plant. The role includes telemetry architecture, dispatch algorithm tuning, and the settlement-grade metering that proves performance to grid operators. You will work through interconnection and market participation rules that differ by ISO, shaping enrollment strategies that maximize both grid value and customer economics. Forecasting is central to the job: your models of fleet availability determine how much capacity the business can confidently bid.
What you will achieve
- Integrate 10,000+ DER devices per year onto the VPP platform with validated telemetry, control response, and settlement-grade metering
- Deliver grid services (frequency response, peak shaving, capacity) with 95 percent or better dispatch compliance across the fleet, with dispatch performance reconciled against market settlement data
- Own device qualification test plans per IEEE 1547 and UL 1741, catching interoperability issues before they reach the field
- Cut dispatch latency and improve fleet response by optimizing communication architectures and control algorithms, tested against historical event days before live market participation
- Drive utility program compliance with measurement, verification, and reporting that passes program administrator audits
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years of experience with distributed energy resources, demand response, or grid-edge technology
- Strong understanding of DER device physics: inverters, batteries, EV chargers, and controllable loads
- Working knowledge of IEEE 1547-2018 interconnection and interoperability requirements
- Familiarity with communication protocols: OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5, SunSpec Modbus, and OCPP
- Data analysis skills in Python for fleet performance analytics and dispatch optimization
- Understanding of wholesale and utility program structures that monetize DER flexibility
- Systems thinking for cybersecurity, customer experience, and fail-safe behavior at fleet scale
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with FERC Order 2222 DER aggregation participation models
- Knowledge of utility hosting capacity analysis and locational value
- Exposure to EV managed charging or vehicle-to-grid pilots
- Background in behavioral demand response program design
- Knowledge of FERC Order 2222 and DER aggregation market models
