Decommissioning Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Decommissioning planning (10 CFR 50.75, 50.82), radiological characterization, dismantling technologies, waste disposition planning, cost estimation, license termination surveys (MARSSIM), project sequencing
About the role
You will engineer the end of a nuclear plant's life for a utility or decommissioning company, planning and executing the safe dismantlement of facilities that operated for decades. The team characterizes contamination, sequences dismantling, manages massive waste volumes, and works toward license termination. You will develop decommissioning plans, oversee contractors, and ensure the site reaches its end state safely. This role matters because decommissioning is the industry's final promise to the public, and your engineering ensures that promise is kept completely and verifiably. You will also develop the decommissioning cost estimates that underpin trust fund adequacy reviews, defending your numbers to regulators and stakeholders. Your segmentation plans will balance worker dose, waste volume, and schedule with the optimization skill the work demands. You will engage with the surrounding community honestly about timelines and end states, because public trust is earned through transparency. Your final surveys will be beyond reproach, since license termination is forever. Your project controls will keep multi-year dismantlement work on budget and on schedule.
What you will achieve
- Develop decommissioning plans meeting all NRC requirements with credible schedules and cost estimates.
- Complete radiological characterization supporting accurate waste classification and work planning.
- Oversee dismantling contractors with safety and radiological performance meeting all project goals.
- Manage waste disposition logistics with zero shipping violations across thousands of shipments.
- Execute final status surveys demonstrating the site meets license termination criteria.
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in decommissioning, waste management, or radiological engineering roles.
- Knowledge of NRC decommissioning regulations under 10 CFR 50.75, 50.82, and 20 Subpart E.
- Experience with radiological characterization methods and MARSSIM survey design.
- Understanding of dismantling technologies: cutting, demolition, and remote handling.
- Ability to manage contractors technically, holding them to nuclear quality standards.
- Cost estimation skills for decommissioning scope with defensible bases.
- Long-term perspective: decommissioning projects span years, and your planning must endure.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with license termination and site release processes.
- Familiarity with decommissioning trust fund management and financial assurance.
- Knowledge of entombment or rubblization strategies and their trade-offs.
- Experience with stakeholder communication for decommissioning communities.
