Datacenter Hardware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. Server board design, high-current power delivery, BMC integration, signal integrity for 56G+ SerDes, thermal design for 1U/2U systems, OCP specifications, power virus testing, airflow analysis
About the role
You will design the server hardware that powers cloud infrastructure, where efficiency, density, and reliability translate directly into datacenter economics at massive scale. Datacenter hardware engineers work at the extreme edge of power delivery and thermal design, packing maximum compute into minimum space while keeping every watt accounted for. Your boards will run 24/7 for years in environments you will never visit, so every design decision has to survive on its engineering merits alone. The work is demanding and quantitative: success is measured in watts saved, degrees managed, and failures that never happen across enormous fleets.
What you will achieve
- Design server boards for compute, storage, or accelerator applications meeting aggressive power efficiency and thermal targets for hyperscale deployment
- Deliver power delivery networks for 500W+ processors with validated transient response and efficiency measurements across operating corners
- Validate high-speed SerDes channels at 56G and above through simulation and lab measurement, achieving target BER margins with headroom
- Support platform bring-up and qualification: thermal validation, power virus testing, and fleet-representative stress runs before deployment
- Drive cost and manufacturability improvements across board revisions without compromising reliability, performance, or serviceability
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years designing server, networking, or other high-power-density electronic hardware that shipped to production
- Experience with high-current power delivery: multiphase VRMs, current sharing, transient response optimization, and efficiency measurement
- Understanding of thermal design for dense systems: heatsink selection, airflow analysis, and component temperature limits under worst-case loads
- Familiarity with BMC architecture and server management interfaces including IPMI and Redfish at the hardware level
- Signal integrity experience with high-speed serial links: simulation, lab measurement, and compliance validation against standards
- Knowledge of server form factors, rack-level constraints, and serviceability requirements for datacenter operations
- BS in Electrical Engineering; MS preferred for this technically demanding domain
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with OCP (Open Compute Project) specifications and contribution processes
- Familiarity with liquid cooling: cold plates, manifolds, coolant distribution, and leak detection integration
- Knowledge of accelerator hardware power and thermal requirements for GPUs, TPUs, or custom AI ASICs
- Experience with hyperscaler qualification processes and fleet-scale failure analysis
