Datacenter Firmware Engineer
The job description
Tech stack. OpenBMC platform, Redfish and IPMI management, server platform initialization sequences, sensor monitoring infrastructure, fan control algorithms, fleet-scale firmware update, embedded Linux (Yocto), PLDM/MCTP protocols
About the role
You will develop the board management firmware inside servers deployed by the tens of thousands in datacenters you will likely never set foot in. Datacenter firmware engineers own the BMC completely: environmental sensors, cooling fans, power monitoring, hardware event logs, and the remote management interfaces that keep enormous fleets healthy and operable. Your code serves as the eyes and hands of operations teams managing physical hardware they will never touch, which makes reliability, observability, and bulletproof remote update capability the absolute core of the job. When your firmware contains a defect, it multiplies across the entire fleet instantly, so your validation discipline must be truly exceptional.
What you will achieve
- Develop production BMC firmware based on OpenBMC for server platforms: comprehensive sensor monitoring, structured event logging, inventory management, and FRU data handling
- Deliver Redfish APIs and data models designed for clean integration with hyperscale fleet management and orchestration software
- Implement intelligent fan control and thermal management algorithms balancing cooling effectiveness, acoustic limits, and power consumption across all operating modes
- Build fleet-safe firmware update mechanisms supporting remote deployment across tens of thousands of nodes, with cryptographic verification and automatic rollback
- Debug complex platform issues spanning BMC firmware, BIOS/UEFI behavior, and hardware interactions using system-level reasoning and effective cross-team collaboration
What you will bring
Must-haves
- 2 to 5 years in firmware, embedded Linux, or systems software development with production deployment experience
- Working experience with BMC management concepts: IPMI command sets, Redfish schema design, sensor data records, and system event log architecture
- Familiarity with embedded Linux platforms: device tree configuration, kernel driver development, userspace daemon design, and Yocto or Buildroot builds
- Understanding of server platform fundamentals: power sequencing requirements, thermal design constraints, FRU inventory management, and PCIe topology
- Ability to debug effectively across firmware layers: BMC firmware logic, BIOS/UEFI interactions, and underlying hardware behavior
- Scripting proficiency in Python for automation tooling, fleet management utilities, and test infrastructure development
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Nice-to-haves
- Upstream OpenBMC contribution experience or deep platform customization work for production servers
- Familiarity with modern platform management protocols: PLDM, MCTP, SPDM, or related DMTF standards
- Knowledge of OCP open hardware specifications and hyperscaler hardware qualification processes
- Experience with secure firmware update architectures, measured boot, and hardware attestation for server platforms
